It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

In this low angst, a sweet retelling of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Bennet is not just idle, he is actively cruel. And Mrs. Bennet, while still uneducated, must do whatever she can to protect her daughters from their father. Mr. Darcy’s epiphany comes much earlier than in canon and it changes his relationships not only with the Bennets but with his sister, his cousin Anne, and Bingley. When the Bennet matriarch moves to an estate outside of Bath with her daughters, Bingley follows and so do both Darcy siblings.

As a child, Elizabeth Bennet's years were split into two distinct segments: her normal life with four rambunctious sisters in Hertfordshire, and summers in Derbyshire on the estate of her father's friend Mr. Darcy. Summertime meant peaks to explore, horses to ride, a library full of books, and friends unlike anyone she knew at home. It was an idyllic escape - until the year that everything came crashing down and summers at Pemberley became no more than a fading memory. When Fitzwilliam Darcy walks into the Meryton Assembly half a decade later, Elizabeth doesn't know how to reconcile the two...

Elizabeth Bennet knows her talents do not lie with the needle. And what does it matter? She only wishes to see her sister Jane joyfully wed to Mr. Bingley. Mr. Darcy? That's a pattern best untouched. Story
In this sweet, clean, low-angst Pride and Prejudice variation, Darcy and Elizabeth meet for the first time when Mr. Darcy Senior stumbles across Elizabeth on the estate grounds. Without a clue as to who this gentleman truly is, she is shepherded into the study to meet the young master of Pemberley. This 62,000 word novel is written from a decidedly Christian perspective although there are scenes of non-graphic intimacy between married couples. Except: “Father, what are you about? Why did you coerce poor Miss Bennet into the study? " "Please sit down, Son. Do you not remember our agreement...

Elizabeth Bennet has led a peaceful life at her family's estate of Longbourn. Then she met the handsome Fitzwilliam Darcy at the Meryton assembly. Her world was about to be turned upside down with the revelation of her true parents, and the person who wanted them dead. Only, her parents' deaths did not discourage the man who hated her birth father, who had spurned the man's sister. I loved this scenario. It’s nice to have an Elizabeth that is allowed to showcase her intelligence and worthiness. Too many Jaff stories have a shrewish unreasonably demanding and unforgiving character. It makes one wonder what would make a man of Darcy’s status interested in her since she is bringing nothing tangible to the table. In some of these books I have thought he would be better off to walk away. His groveling too much to be believed. In this story I appreciated that the Bennet’s are much more important and palatable. I’ve had enough of the same tired exploits of Wickham, Lydia and Mrs. Bennet’s wailing. I found this book much more entertaining and appreciated the creativity and the notes to authenticate the events of the period. While I prefer a talented reader I did not find the VV intolerable. I prefer stories with all the Bennet sisters pretty and Charlotte attractive too. Lovely story that I very much enjoyed. Brava, well done.
