Alexander and his growing legion have managed to escape Nova Roma and, more importantly, learned that the rest of the world may not be as ravaged by monsters as they had all thought. Join them as they set sail for ancient Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, to try to learn more about the wider world outside Nova Roma. Along the way, they'll encounter a growing plague of deadly pirates, deceitful old merchant families out to quash any new competitors in the region, mysterious new allies, and much more.

Just as Alexander is starting to feel hope that humanity may actually survive, something happens to tear him away from everyone and everything he has come to care about. Lost, shackled, and without the majority of his skills, Alexander will be forced to confront a new side of himself, a darker, more violent side that threatens to take control of his mind and the new powers he has managed to craft for himself. If he can't learn to resist the growing corruption of his mind, he may not just be a danger to himself and those he cares about, but may become a danger to the very world itself.

Audiobook narrated by the wonderful Christian J. Gilliland.

bit exposition heavy but good

need to cut some some of the exposition in some of this I was starting to nod off. The narrator was not helping, very clear reading but voice was flat an borrowing button all in all solid 4 stars.

Awesome story

I’ll be preordering every release. Bummed Jakes got out on back burner but I do like this series much better.

Great Series

I'm loving this series so far. Pretty perspective coming from the viewpoint of a hyper intelligent AI.

The narrator still is inconsistent.

Mispronunciation and accents that are too thick.
Story is great, but the narrator could be better.

Dragged a bit, but overall I liked it

The story has a bit of a pacing issue, but I suspect that’s because the author said the series was initially 3 books and now expanded to 5 during editing.

In the final moments a lot of interesting things happen that make me wonder about the direction of the story, so I would still recommend it - although it’s not as strong as the first entry!

Classic storytelling

One of the best telling of a modern genre...great buildup of characters and world

Story okay but way too much exposition

J.R. Mathews moves the story along steadily, along with the introduction of new antagonists with interesting and unique skills. Also, the leveling stats dumps were kept to a minimum which is always a good thing for audio listeners, However, there was too much exposition which while interesting at first, soon began to feel a bit bloated. The story easily could have been cut in half and been better for it. There another odd thing that surfaces in this novel. Alexander seems to grow an overly affectionate attraction to his lizard mount and a wraith apparition companion and, so far, distanced himself from a relationship to a corporal being.

Christian J. Gilliland's performance was quite good though the Mediterranean accents were difficult to understand at times.

Great Sequel! Can’t Wait for the Next One!

So good. A nice continuation of the first story, taking Alexander to new and different heights with new fantastical challenges. Great performance by the reader, too!
