Publisher's summary

This dazzling thriller pits Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta against greater odds than ever before.

Convicted serial killer Carrie Grethen has escaped from a psychiatric hospital with plans for revenge. Wary and shaken, Scarpetta also has to investigate the death by fire of an unknown woman. The post mortem reveals the woman was stabbed before the fire was started, and soon Scarpetta and her colleagues are called out to the scene of another fire and another murder.

When her lover, Benton Wesley, disappears while following up a tip-off, Scarpetta, with sudden, appalling clarity, sees that Carrie has set up a scenario in which she has the upper hand and can manipulate them all.

Reading

I loved the book and story was moving but the narration sounded like a computer was reading it. However this was the first time I have heard Karen White read. Overall it was a great read.

Amazing story! Definitely not my favorite narrator. will continue getting Patricia Cornwell books. Wished all her books were on Audible and in English.

Atrocious narrator

I felt like Kay Scarlett’s was a wimpy whiny entitled woman rather than the intelligent competent woman we have grown to appreciate. So glad this was a one and done for this narrator !

Dr. Scarpetta does it again

Narrator is terrible but the story is another great one in the Scarpetta series. Listen at 1.25x speed and it’s better.

Narrator???

The story was great, the narrator not so much. I won’t be listening to anything she narrates.

Horrible Narrator

Enjoying the book but the narrator is cringe worthy. She's ruining the characters for me.

Point of?

The writing was a little too embellished with description of things that did not enhance the story

Amazing writing but horrible performance.

Karen White can only perform whinny or dramatic or both. It was painful to listen to this! Why why would you not continue having amazing C J Critt performing Dr Scarpetta???? Anyways, Patricia Cornwell is an amazing writer!

Great story, not a fan of the narrator.

Always great work from Patrica Cornell, the change in narrator is hard to adjust. Almost returned the purchase.

Very disappointing narration

I have been listening to all of this series back to back. I am very disappointed in the choice of narration for this book for multiple reasons. The original narrator, CJ, was absolutely amazing. She encapsulated the persona so well and reflected the writing in her tone and delivery. Unfortunately, the narrator with this story was very lacking for me. While she read the story very well, her tone and pitch and delivery were horrible. She made Kay sound like an emotional wreck just flailing through life. When it is specifically noted that she is very reserved and only shows her emotions and vulnerable side to a select few. I'm also really disappointed with the narration change because this was a very pivotal book in the series. A lot of things happened and I didn't even get to experience the story as part of the continuation because I was so distracted by the overly dramatic presentation of the book.
