Very good for a part two.

Overall, it is not bad as a continuation of book one. personally, I think this should've been boundled as one book instead of two. You see some more character development out of the MC, but not much. he still frequently has to go to his spell list instead of just using the spell.

Just like the first book, it is very stat heavy. But it still makes up for it in the details given during the fight scenes.

I was given a copy of this book to review, and personally if you liked the first book you should pick this one up as well. It does not disappoint.

Swashbuckling magic

As an older guy, I grew on reruns of pirate movies on sailing ships. Swashbuckling sword fights and saving the fair damsels. This is a long way from that! This has magic and no overly dramatic but chaste kisses. This is a modern fantasy version of those old movies. This is a great adventure aboard the Spitfire that is expertly narrated by Theodore Zephyr and Julia Walker. This brings back the fun of swords, seas and adventures. Totally enjoyable listen, especially for some of us older guys.

I was given a free code for an early and honest review of this audiobook. This is an excellent sequel to the first book which I also got a 5 star review from me.

Good story continuation

This was good story continuation. My only issue with this book was that the story progression felt li0ke it took the entire book to happen and even then....not much really happened. So why did I feel it was good. Well the book is written well and presented well. Just my personal opinion was that more could have happened in 10 hours of story telling.

Theodore Zephyr and Julia Walker continue to give a great performance with this book.

A fun ride

I received a free copy to give my honest review. I've always loved the concept of "Flintlock Fantasy", and this book delivers. Without spoiling the plot, this story is a fast-paced adventure and does not waste your time. A great sequel and well worth a listen.

Enjoyable, Action-Packed Read

As the title states, this book is full of as much excitement and action as the first book! There is not a ton of world building, however, for a straightforward story like this one it’s not really needed. The main character does develop a lot more in this second book than he does in the first which is fantastic! Though I feel like other characters could have been more fleshed out - I would have liked to see more depth with some of them!

This is the first pirate/sea based book I’ve ever read and the use of detail when it comes to the language and tools needed for running a ship really helped me feel immersed in the story! Will definitely be looking for more pirate-themed books now! I will say though, I think both of these books would have probably done best as one novel, rather than two. The split seemed unnecessary and clunky.

One, honestly minor, thing that bothered me from the start is referring to Shaw, a griffon, as a “drake.” Unless this is specific to the book’s universe then aren’t these two different races? Again, minor, but it certainly threw me off.

I will say the voice actors in this book got a lot better! It was a challenge for me to listen through the first book simply for the narration. Everyone had the same voice and intonations in every scenario. This book was a HUGE improvement and I ended it feeling impressed by the growth and I ended up really enjoying both of them!

Awesome Sequel

When it comes to a sequel, I am personally looking for everything that made the last book worth it and then some. In my opinion that is this book. I still remember the beginning of the first book with all the chaos that was taking place complete with gods and certain about our main characters origin or type. How fast we got into the story and the game like system complete with three extra lives they got whittled down pretty quickly. That pace appears to be the same in my opinion for book 2. This is still the only series that I've dug into from this author who was new to me at the time that I came across book 1. The same is true for the narration team who honestly I think did a fantastic job with their performances. The authors got a bunch of other stuff available not only in eBook form but additional audio books as well to check out once you get done with this book. I do like the pirate and magic mix, finding the whole thing very entertaining and as such would recommend this story to anybody reading this review. Lastly, I'll just say well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the Audible listeners.

An excellent second!!

First off, love the dual narration! Secondly, loving the rich characters, the intelligent and well informed nautical jargon and info displayed by the author as well as the fast paced, action packed pace of the novel. Great follow up!!!

I'm just not a fan of this kind of storytelling.

I'll keep it short and sweet.

Some authors love to heap massive piles of dung on their protagonists - they generally call this 'conflict.'

The problem is, when you make your character an underdog, there becomes a level of 'dung' that you can heap on your character that their success becomes to impossible that you've strained credulity. Instead of a thrilling tale where the underdog triumphs over evil, you have one where the enemies have to be so cartoonishly incompetent, or the protagonist so lucky, that any joy one could glean from the plot becomes meaningless and unrewarding.

That's where this book lies for me. I just became exhausted after the 50th thing went horribly wrong during their ship battle that I just gave up.

You overplayed it and it left me feeling annoyed, not thrilled.
