Publisher's summary

It is 1964, and 14-year-old Jocie Brooke is about to have an unforgettable summer. Her father has found a new love, her hippie sister is about to have a baby, and her aunt is finally pleasurable to live with. But when a Black family from Chicago moves into the quiet hamlet of Holly County, Kentucky, Jocie finds herself befriending a boy whom some townspeople shun.

Due to the unspoken racial lines in this Southern town, the presence of these newcomers sparks a smoldering fire of unrest that will change Holly County - and Jocie - forever.

Orchard of Hope, the riveting sequel to The Scent of Lilacs, takes listeners along to experience unexpected love, fear, forgiveness, new life, and a deeper understanding of the value of each individual's story.

Life in the Sixties

Orchard of Hope is about life in the small town of Hollyhill in 1964! I enjoyed hearing more about the life of 14 year old Jocie Brooke in this sequel to The Scent of Lilacs. Jocie lives through a tornado and meets a new boy in town, Aaron, who is a boy of color. Aaron's family has moved from Chicago so it is a new experience both for his family and the town of Hollyhill. I admired Jocie's father, the Reverend Brooke as he provides support to many people in the community even when the Klan comes after him and he finds himself falling in love. I found Jocie's pregnant sister somewhat humorous as she neared the end of her pregnancy. You will be encouraged as you read how the community comes together in the time of need. I received a complimentary audio book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Timely

Set in a small Kentucky town during the turbulent times of the mid 1960s, this is the heartwarming story about a young girl, innocence lost, love found, the power of prayer and the importance of faith as she and her family navigate the societal and moral challenges of the time. You will fall in love with Jocey and her nontraditional family as they face issues they could not have imagined they would face in their small part of the world. The summer starts with a tornado and ends with a community coming together in love and forgiveness after witnessing the damaging effects of hate. Orchard of Hope is a Christian fiction novel with strong messages of faith, prayer and love, reminding us again how important it is to love your neighbor .

Enjoyed so much

I loved this book, it has hard subjects but Ann had a way of making it flow and come together. The narration was wonderful.Ann knew just what inflection she wanted for each character and she stayed true to each character's voice throughout the story.
