Publisher's summary

An eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes.

In his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes argued that our diet's overemphasis on certain kinds of carbohydrates - not fats and not simply excess calories - has led directly to the obesity epidemic we face today. The result of thorough research, keen insight, and unassailable common sense, Good Calories, Bad Calories immediately stirred controversy and acclaim among academics, journalists, and writers alike. Michael Pollan heralded it as "a vitally important book, destined to change the way we think about food."

Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, Taubes now revisits the urgent question of what's making us fat - and how we can change - in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubes' crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience.

Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the "calories in, calories out" model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulin's regulation of our fat tissue. He also answers the most persistent questions: Why are some people thin and others fat? What roles do exercise and genetics play in our weight? What foods should we eat, and what foods should we avoid?

Packed with essential information and concluding with an easy-to-follow diet, Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it.

Want to learn...this is for you!

I love how there where notes, photos, and a lot of research that one could look up to verify the claims made.

With all the diets available today this was a great way for me to put the why behind the how.

Total Education - Everyone should hear this

If you could sum up Why We Get Fat in three words, what would they be?

Informative. Spot On. 'No bs' approach

If you could give Why We Get Fat a new subtitle, what would it be?

How to change your life forever and stop sulking about something you have the power to change.

Any additional comments?

I just loved this book. I actually decided to cut all refined carbs (apart from wine) before I bought this book. I had massive results. Lost 22kg in 4.5 months. I am so happy I purchased this book, now I understand how my body works and how to be healthier and feel amazing for the rest of my life!

During this time, I have not felt very deprived. Just had my goal in mind. I have been dieting for the past 12 years going back and forth but spending about 90% of the past 12 years very unhappy about my weight. As I listened, I realised why I failed in the past and why this time was working! And worked super well!

Now it is about more than just weight, it is about understanding my body and what is best for me. I am listening to this book for the 3rd time now. Cant believe I stumbled upon this book, this is my source of truth now.

Easy to listen to, easy to follow, makes so much sense you will be left wondering how you ever dieted in the past! Must read / listen!! :)

for everyone a must

I have lost 50 lbs using the principles of this book. This is the best analysis of how this happened, and should be considered by all who doubt the effects and consequences of carbohydrates on obesity.
