Publisher's summary

When someone we love is grieving, we want to be there. But it's easy to feel paralyzed, worried that we might say or do the wrong thing.

Nancy Guthrie has personal experience dealing with pain and knows what words of encouragement are helpful and what words are harmful. Drawing from her own life experiences - including the loss of two young children - Guthrie has written this helpful resource for Christians who want to be better friends to those who are suffering. Practical and down-to-earth, this book includes examples and helpful tips from real grieving people who have been helped (and hurt) by friends who meant well, equipping listeners to come alongside and comfort loved ones who are hurting.

Rejoice and Grieve

With a new relationship in hands, my beautiful bride to be has lost her mother. This is something I’m not familiar with or can say can relate too. I started this books in hopes of doing more of the right things instead of the wrong. I have repented and been given an understanding by reading and practicing what this book teaches. I would recommend to anyone who is genuinely seeking to be their for someone during their time of grief.

The book was fine

It could have been half as long. It wasn’t great but I took a couple of take aways. I finished it just to say I did.

Helpful

This book should serve as a manual for those interacting with people who are grieving. It is very much about the relational aspects.

Excellent Book, Poor Narration

It is very hard to find a practical book on grief. They all seem to be filled with platitudes, especially the Christian ones. This one is practical and filled with a lot of good advice. I wish I could say the same for the narration. It was rather depressing.

Empathy/& Christianity Based

I found the communication lessons helpful however it shifts to religion... Anyone grieving tends to lean more on external forces and I feel like this can become exploitive of the individual as they should be concerned about their loved ones.

Insightful and Practical

Nancy Guthrie and others who contributed helped me understand my wife's grief and more equipped to walk with her in it. It provided me a window into understanding her. It gave me a better sense of what not to say and what to say in my desire to comfort her. Recommend highly!

Wonderful Resource

I was helped tremendously by this book. Would have appreciated if it were easier to differentiate between the author's own experience and the quotations she uses.
