Editorial reviews

Most people shy away from philosophy, thinking of it as a discipline that can only be understood by the intelligentsia. Authors Stockton and Heuer elegantly dispute this prejudice. They argue that we all inevitably engage in critical thinking on a routine basis. They also explain classic philosophical methods and theories through the lens of daily, relatable human experience. These authors manage something miraculous: They render highly abstract ideas accessible in present life without diluting the original meaning. Narrator Theresa McCarthy’s grown-up tone matches the text. McCarthy sounds calm, dispassionate, wise, and wry. Her voice does what the authors hope: She encourages ordinary people to think of themselves as critical thinkers. This book confirms that critical thinking can aid those stumped by tricky circumstances.

Publisher's summary

A popular question in philosophy is "How do I know I exist?" That seems really boring, though. How about, "How can I use logic to get over my ex?" If you really love wisdom, you love it in all situations - you don't need to be spoon fed unsolved problems in philosophy, because you're already analyzing the US Weekly you’re reading or your kinda significant other. Sarah Heuer and Chrissy Stockton are writers living in Minneapolis who are determined to do something more interesting with their philosophy degrees than talk about dead white guys. PhiLOLZophy: Critical Thinking in Digestible Doses helps its listeners think critically about vodka, religion, and sex - proving that brains do have more fun.

A lot of complaining

It was ok. It's short so it's not to much time wasted. Only get it if it's free, not worth a full credit.

Terrible

Would you try another book from Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer and/or Theresa McCarthy?

no

Has PhiLOLZophy turned you off from other books in this genre?

no

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She just sounded boring... honestly, I don't know how much of it was her vs. what she was saying....

What character would you cut from PhiLOLZophy?

I would re-think writing it at all

Any additional comments?

My honest reaction is that this author thought pretty highly of herself and not much of those who might read or listen to the book. It seems a little like a half-backed attempt to make easy money by claiming to write something relevant. Maybe that's just me, though.

Over-the-Top Vulgarity

I wish Audible would put a warning label on books that contain this much vulgarity. I could not even finish the first track. A total waste of bytes.

Terrible. I couldn't even finish it.

This book tries so hard to be funny but falls far short of it's goal, and instead just comes off as annoyingly snarky. It isn't even really about critical thinking, more of a list of common sense, anecdotal tips such as, don't talk back to your boss, don't be rude to people that are grieving, and your boyfriend is a jerk. I got this title as a free promotion and tried to finish many times, but at 60% got so annoyed that I finally came to grips with the fact that the book contained no useful information and gave it up for good. Don't bother with this one.

Written to Be Read, Not Heard

It's an interesting set of essays linking practical philosophy and real life, but the transition parts aren't quite as easy on the ears as they sound like they should be on the eyes. The narrator, however, does a very good job of extending the personal quality of the writing. It works a lot better when she has whole sentences to read. There are lots of sentence fragments used as emphasis.

The author definitely pulls off putting philosophy into plain speech, dropping all the pomposity of abstracted intellectualism normally associated with philosophy. There are no "how many angels could dance on the head of a pin?" conversations. There are a lot of examples, like how learning about the different types of philosophy can be applied to getting over a bad break up.

painful

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less ranting and overall bitchieness

Has PhiLOLZophy turned you off from other books in this genre?

no

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Theresa McCarthy?

She was fine.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

um...

Any additional comments?

the good thing was that it was free. The bad thing is that now I have to go through the process of removing it from all of my devices. (sorry, best rant I could come up with on short notice.)

Scattered at best.

The authors led us to believe that the book was a philosophical analysis of everyday activities offered with a touch of humour. After all the title is phi.LOL.zophy. Well, it's at best a bad attempt that misses in all aspects. Neither an interesting analysis, nor funny, or philosophical, this book was, at best, scattered thoughts thrown on paper.

Critical Thinking?

Why would you create a book to talk down to people about their religious beliefs and call it "Critical Thinking"? This was a waste and I am not happy about the audiobook itself, the time I wasted on it and I am a bit upset about the nonsense of it all. Thank God it was FREE! Otherwise Audible.com would be refunding me a credit. I really disliked this audiobook and I finished it only to tell you...don't do it! There is no wisdom in this book at all just chatter.

Only for early 20 year old females

If I were college age woman, it may be worth it, but older man, this was worthless after first 15 minutes. This really is an autobiography of when author was in college and bar hopping I think, with the splattering of some philosophers names to try to give it credibility. I'm upset I didn't see this on the free listen list and paid for it...NOT worth time or money.

A Shallow Non-Intellectual Exercise

Any additional comments?

It is easy to belittle and berate this book, honestly it wasn't worth the free price, but it wasn't without some redeeming values. The way the author presented herself as enlightened and better than you because she is a philosopher was off-putting, practical experience has shown me at least that a philosopher is not often the most intelligent person in the room only the most likely to argue. Her views on sex as a purely recreational and fun activity are particularly disturbing. She ignores the emotional entanglements that result from sex and in fact dismisses them as a pitiable crutch of the ignorant. As presented, these views represent the devolution of society and highlight the pain of the author and give the reader insight into her apparent inability to form meaningful lasting relationships.
