Editorial reviews

Most people shy away from philosophy, thinking of it as a discipline that can only be understood by the intelligentsia. Authors Stockton and Heuer elegantly dispute this prejudice. They argue that we all inevitably engage in critical thinking on a routine basis. They also explain classic philosophical methods and theories through the lens of daily, relatable human experience. These authors manage something miraculous: They render highly abstract ideas accessible in present life without diluting the original meaning. Narrator Theresa McCarthy’s grown-up tone matches the text. McCarthy sounds calm, dispassionate, wise, and wry. Her voice does what the authors hope: She encourages ordinary people to think of themselves as critical thinkers. This book confirms that critical thinking can aid those stumped by tricky circumstances.

Publisher's summary

A popular question in philosophy is "How do I know I exist?" That seems really boring, though. How about, "How can I use logic to get over my ex?" If you really love wisdom, you love it in all situations - you don't need to be spoon fed unsolved problems in philosophy, because you're already analyzing the US Weekly you’re reading or your kinda significant other. Sarah Heuer and Chrissy Stockton are writers living in Minneapolis who are determined to do something more interesting with their philosophy degrees than talk about dead white guys. PhiLOLZophy: Critical Thinking in Digestible Doses helps its listeners think critically about vodka, religion, and sex - proving that brains do have more fun.

I didn't think ladies were quite that crude...

... so maybe the authors are really former soldiers.

Even though it gave me some insight into an xyl's mind, it's a good thing this was free. I'd have asked for my money back if it wasn't.

Not good

This was not my type of book. I didn't care for the tone or anything else for that matter. Maybe some people like books like this but I found it so bad that I cut it off after about thirty min. Would never recommend.

A waste of time!

Would you try another book from Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer and/or Theresa McCarthy?

This book is not bite sized insights into critical thinking, it is a ego centric ramble from to people who think they have become the center of the universe because they have they have studied philosophy and have insights that no one except them can understand.

Any additional comments?

Don't waste your time with this book.

Want four letter words in the preface?

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I cannot imagine

Has PhiLOLZophy turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes. In fact I wouldn't have picked this book myself. I downloaded it as a free gift from Audible for Valentines Day. Previous free gifts have been really interesting, or fun. This was just annoying.

What aspect of Theresa McCarthy’s performance would you have changed?

I would have put a warning on the front of the book that I should not play it in front of my 5 year old by accident.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from PhiLOLZophy?

I would have cut F***, A**holes, and Sh**head from the book.

Any additional comments?

I understand that someone else may have liked this book. Next time you send me a free gift, please put something on the gift so I know not to play it in front of my child. I will probably skip it entirely and we'll all be happier.

Disappointing

What would have made PhiLOLZophy better?

I would have liked for the author to have dug a little deeper and actually gotten philosophical.

What was most disappointing about Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer ’s story?

There were just a bunch of random thoughts, without ever seeming to really get philosophical. There seemed to be a lot of whining and a touch of humor. At the end, it just felt like there was very little of value offered.

Did Theresa McCarthy do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

There really weren't characters in this book.

What character would you cut from PhiLOLZophy?

The author?

All about me:An immature grad student's take

What would have made PhiLOLZophy better?

Leave out the journal writing and your agenda and focus on the critical thinking

What could Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I think it's a rewrite.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from PhiLOLZophy?

I would have tossed it. Title and cover art are fun, but there is too much this is how I see it and the rationale is immature. The citings of philosophy are poorly backed up.

Better than a Poke in the Eye, Just

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Focused on a female reader/listener.

Would you recommend PhiLOLZophy to your friends? Why or why not?

It is mildly entertaining, for light background noise.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from PhiLOLZophy?

It just isn't written to be an audio recording. It uses numbered lists and rambling asides. In text it would be more coherent.

Any additional comments?

Light comedy. Not logic. Not philosophy. Not something to take seriously. But, what do you expect for a two-hours glorified pamphlet?

Meh to Bleh...

What would have made PhiLOLZophy better?

Just found it to be a poor excuse to cuss about mundane topics. I am philosophy major myself and I love the premise of the book (to help use philosophy in the real world and to shape real decisions) but it falls short anything eye opening. I liked the intro - thought we were gonna go places and then after 2 hours - I had to delete it. Just not good.

Glad it was free

What was most disappointing about Chrissy Stockton and Sarah Heuer ’s story?

Overall I found the book offensive. She spoke about life and as if her experience were the only true and genuine ones. As if nothing outside her world could be true or make sense. For some like philosophy that is so broad and theoretical she wrote like her thoughts and experiences were the only valid ones.

Any additional comments?

I would not recommend this title to anyone. The description offered for the book is very misleading. Unless you want to listen to a few hours of someone telling you that unless you see life exactly as she does then you are uneducated and haven't really thought philosophically about life. It was honestly offensive to me as a woman who considers herself very logically and actually does take time to think about these things to have someone speak as if she was all knowing and had the only worthwhile opinion.
