Editorial reviews

Jesse Einstein brings a clear voice and understated performance to Peter Ross Range’s nonfiction crime story Murder in the Yoga Store: The True Story of the Lululemon Killing.

Range, a one-time overseas bureau chief for Time, brings his reporting skills to the murder of the Washington, D.C., yoga store employee who was stabbed to death by her co-worker. Vividly evoking both the victim and the killer, the author recounts the incident, the ensuing cover-up by the murderer, and, ultimately, her arrest and trial.

Einstein trusts the power of this grisly true life story and reads it carefully – and without any overly dramatic flourishes.

Publisher's summary

Murder In The Yoga Store is the true story of the brutal killing of a beautiful young woman at a chic Lululemon yoga-wear shop. The grisly murder was committed on a pleasant Friday night in upscale Bethesda, Maryland, a leafy suburb of Washington, D.C. In this riveting narrative by veteran journalist Peter Ross Range, the author for the first time brings together the tale of what really happened in the yoga store murder. He portrays the personalities of both victim and murderer, along with the strange and convoluted circumstances of the crime and its cover-up. Range meticulously exposes layer upon layer of deceit and confusion. His account builds the tension of the police investigation until the real story, so odd and creepy, takes your breath away. The drama of the murder trial is a moving emotional roller coaster built around the prosecutors, the detectives and the family of the victim.

Peter Ross Range is a longtime Washington, D.C., magazine writer. A former White House correspondent for U.S. News & World Report and foreign correspondent for Time, Range has covered politics, international affairs and war. He has written for The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic and many other publications.

Great true crime read!

I always feel morbid for liking true crime books, but they wouldn't be written if people like me didn't read them. The author did a great job relating the awful events of this crime.

Wow!

Insane story and turn of events. As harsh as it sounds, there are no mistakes. God knows what Jayna did to Brittany in past lives..

Good quick story

Very close to my home; I've probably been to every place mentioned. Ironic how much of the story is devoted to being overtly-PC toward blacks and women

Fascinating account of true story

I found the book very interesting. I was unaware of the real murder, but liked the factual presentation of the story. I especially liked the author's straight forward style.

I DID NOT EJOY THIS BOOK DUE TO THE READER

Is there anything you would change about this book?

FOR SURE THE READER. BUT THE STORY COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER TOO. MORE DETAILS I FELT THE STORY SWEPT THRU THE INVESTIGATION AWFULLY FAST.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

THE POLICE DID A GREAT JOB. I WOULD HAVE LIKED MORE INFORMATION ON THE INVESTIGATION WHICH SEEMED VERY INTERESTING. I WAS BORED WITH BRITTANY'S CRAP.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jesse Einstein?

SCOTT BRICK OR DAVID PITTU.

Do you think Murder in the Yoga Store needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO. BUT THE BOOK WAS TOO SHORT. WHAT IS THERE TO FOLLOW UP ON?

Any additional comments?

THE NARRATOR READ CLEARLY BUT ROBOTIC. I FIND OFTEN IF I DON'T LIKE THE NARRATOR IF THE STORY IS REALLY GOOD, I GROW TO LIKE THE NARRATOR. OBVIOUSLY THIS BOOK WAS NOT GREAT. BUT IT WAS NOT A BAD BOOK IN ITSELF.

So tragic

This is such a sad and tragic true story on how quickly life can end. The thought that one can be so angry and do this to another human being is just dumbfounding. Prayers to the family of Jena +

It was worth 99 cents.

Quick, true crime story. Waste of a wonderful life by another soulless piece of evil. I feel sadness for Jana and her family.

Crazy story with fascinating details

What did you like best about Murder in the Yoga Store? What did you like least?

I had seen the story on a true crime TV show, so I knew who "done it". The book provides so many great details behind the "why" that it did not matter that I already knew the outcome.
The narrator was not great--did not add to the telling of the story.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The perpertrator's backstory and the details of how the crime was committed.

What three words best describe Jesse Einstein’s performance?

boring, staccato

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely

Sad, and tragic

Sad story, and a good Memorial for Jayna from Lulu Lemon. Shocking story, but somewhat dry. In overall performance and how the story was organized. It makes me appreciate the podcast of "serial" story telling approach more.
