Publisher's summary

Geek girl Lexi Carmichael thought getting engaged would mean calmer days ahead. But when Slash's past brings up more questions than answers, she's not going to let anything - or anyone - drive them apart.

Getting engaged is supposed to be a fun, exciting time in a girl's life. But things are never that easy for Slash and me. Instead, someone is threatening to expose Slash's past - a past so secret, even I know very little about it.

Before I can get used the weight of Nonna's antique ring on my finger, he's on his way to Rome...and we're farther apart than we've ever been. Still, I have no intention of sitting at home and letting him take on the Vatican by himself.

With a little expert-level hacking, I learn Slash is keeping secrets from me. Big ones. Dangerous ones. In fact, the more I dig into Slash's past, the more I discover things about him I never knew - things that eventually pit us against each other.

From Rome to the Amalfi coast to the highest levels of the Vatican, we both race to discover the truth. No matter what I find, we're officially a team now, so I won't let him face this alone. Even if I don't know if our relationship can survive it.

Narration

I love all the Lexi Carmichael books. However this time it sounds like the narrator just got brand new braces and is suffering through the narration. Very hard to listen to the narrator but the plot is good.

Slash’s story

This is Slash’s history. Lexi proved her mettle in helping him. Some very funny situations and scary times. The reader sounds like she has new braces or dentures. I went back to see if she was the same reader as on previous books. She still does a great Slash.

Disappointed in Narration

The narrator sounds like she’s talking with a retainer in her mouth. Heavy lisping on all “S” and “Sh” sounds. Not exaggerating.

I like Lexi because she struggles with adapting to change and is frequently outside her comfort zone, but moves forward regardless. Now the exasperation and stress she feels when confronted with a new situation comes off sounding like a whiny, immature teenager.

And Slash, who always sounded like an Italian by way of Transylvania, is actually the easiest one to listen to now because the added lisp just lends a small amount of absurdity to round out the narrator’s Italian accent.

Something was up with the audio

The book was awesome. Unfortunately, something was up with the audio narration, giving the characters speech impediments. This narrator is gifted and talented, giving a flawless performance in every other title I’ve heard so I’m sure the flaw must be with the microphone or something else.

What is with the narrator?

Great series and I love all the books, but the narrator has a lisp in this book. She talks like she just had orthodontics. Others might not be bothered, but I found it really annoying.

Absolutely the Best Yet

This was my first Lexi Carmichael audiobook, although I’ve read all previous books. Once I got used to the lisp in the actor’s speech, I got totally absorbed in the book. How Julie Moffett was able to top all previous books is beyond me. This one delves into Slash’s hidden past and into his biological parents. Not unlike the others, Julie leaves the reader, or listener, waiting for the next installment.

Mysteries solved - New mysteries revealed

Fun read. Great development of their relationship. Good to see her LBC is still following her. Nonna is still a favorite and she and Lexi make a good team.
Keep them coming.

Wish I had read other reviews before purchasing

Sure do wish I would have read the reviews before purchasing the audio book the narrator who I loved in all the other books seems to be having some type of problem with her mouth and it made it almost impossible to listen to the book..... seriously the lisp and slurring made it impossible to follow the story and by the middle of chapter 2 I gave up and will now need to find time to try to read the book instead... disappointing I was so excited to listen to this book and relistened to all the other books in the series in preparation for its release.

Lexi and Slash Are A Couple—In Love

Lexi Carmichael, the geek girl, and her hot Italian fiancé Slash are holding their engagement party when what sounds like gun shots erupt. Because Slash is a NSA operative with a long history of working within the Vatican, he interprets the items sent to him as a threat against Lexi so he proceeds to go to Italy and address the issue. Of course, Lexi, being a superb hacker in her own right (after all that’s how she and Slash first met), she gets involved and determines that Slash is in trouble and needs her. They are a couple and he should not be keeping secrets. So, off to Italy she flies. She finds Slash by visiting his like a father, Father Emilio. Emilio tells her as much as he can but also tells her the hotel Slash usually stays in when visiting. She goes to the hotel and finds Slash and they take off on an adventure that has them inside The Vatican, in a small village looking for clues to his past, and visiting his grandmother. It is a complex mystery involving politics of the Vatican and even the reveal of his biological father. His mother is nearby but he doesn’t know that. Maybe in future books she will be revealed. Anyway, the audible book makes it even better. Even though in one place, Slash’s grandmother is speaking broken English which we know she can’t speak. No worries, it only lasts for a short time. Kristin Watson Heintz is the narrator and she is excellent.

Julie Moffett has written another fabulous story!

This story has everything we have come to expect from a Lexi Carmichael mystery: Humor, intrigue, action, and the adorable awkwardness that is Lexi. I was pulled into the story, trying to figure out what was going to happen next; I laughed when our heroine found herself in yet another situation that got out of hand; and I cried as Lexi and Slash discovered painful truths from his past. I have loved each book in this series and this one is no exception.
