Publisher's summary

From the author of the Themis Files and the Take Them to the Stars series comes a new, riveting story of first contact.

What kind of message would you have sent into space?

I wouldn’t have.

Why not?

Because they might hear it, and then they might come.

A mysterious radio signal is picked up from a neighboring star system. A group of experts is brought to the floor of the Grand Canyon to investigate its origin and its meaning as the planet suffers one natural disaster after another. Cut off from the rest of the world, they must question everything, including each other, if they hope to solve the mystery.

What they discover could be the difference between life as we know it—and the end of the world.

About the Creator

Sylvain Neuvel dropped out of high school at age 15. Along the way, he has been a journalist, worked in soil decontamination, sold ice cream in California, and furniture across Canada. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago. He taught linguistics in India, and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. He absolutely loves toys; his girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course). His debut, Sleeping Giants, was described by NPR as "one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory."

Featured Article: Best of the Year—The 12 Best Sci-Fi Listens of 2022

This year’s sci-fi didn’t shy away from heavy, timely topics like climate change, pandemics, and social justice, but even as the subject matter hit close to home, the listening reached to new heights. Several stunning multicast productions make up this list—as well as narrators we can’t hear enough of. In a world that seems increasingly science fictional by the year, the bar is only set higher for creators in this genre—and this year’s list inches it up a little more.

Exceptional

Incredibly interesting. The backdrop for this imaginative story regarding extra terrestrial or spuritual beings. All with a backdrop of historic events and outer space related (real science not syfy) information. Too complicated to summarize so do yourself a favor and just listen.

Performance was fantastic!

Thought provoking, well written & performed

I freely admit that I got this title from the Audible Plus catalog because it was free. (I overspent my Audible budget this month but I’m addicted.)

I didn’t expect a lot from such a short piece, but wow I am so very pleased with my lucky download. It is tightly written and well performed by all. You don’t need a long recording to pack a punch.

If you like Cosmos or Contact, I’ll bet you will love this novella.

Interesting twists and turns

You never quite know where this story is going but I very much enjoyed the journey and the ending. The title is something we all should follow.

First contact- with a touch of kindnes

I told her "I wish there were more nice people".

The cast did a terrific job with this! I don't think it would have hit as strongly without the full cast experience.

As many people have said this is a first contact story and no one does it quite like Sylvain Neuvel. The writing makes you fall in love with the cast of characters, provides scientific reasons why this might be the case, and answers the "what would the government do with this information and do we tell them?" I greatly enjoyed this book. Even though it was 2.5 hours the story was well rounded. If this is your first Sylvain Neuvel book- may I recommend Sleeping Giants next? Happy listening.

Interesting

A different way of looking at life from galaxies away. Not my cup of tea, but a new way of thinking about aliens.

Original SiFy with a few twist

Both entertaining an thought provoking. What more could you ask for. I usually don't care for production, because the music interferes with the speakers, but this book did not have that problem.

A totally engaging and uplifting story!

Five. Stars all around! The run time for this story is supposed to be a little under three hours. I started listening when I lay down to fall asleep. Usually I can manage to pull asleep within 30 to 45 minutes and I swear it really seemed as if only 45 minutes to an hour head past when the audiobook recording ended. The plot, the way the author wrote the characters, dialogue, and the way the actors performed had me completely absorbed. The only time I found myself distracted, was when my cat climbed onto my shoulder to curl up and for about 10 minutes, the audiobook hard to compete with her loudly, contented purring.

yet another cliche twist ending

I may be the only one, but I am getting weary of the closing chapter "I found love" cliche being magnified by more cliches...
