Complex Psychedelic Experience

This is a complex story about a group of people willingly engaging in an experimental and almost psychedelic encounter directed by others with a desire to push humans well beyond their psychological limits. The participants must overcome enforced violence, depravity, isolation, drugs, sex, and more. Reminiscent of the 70’s sci-fi futuristic stories and modern sitcoms about peculiar groups in odd situations, it also resonates around themes marked by societal breakdowns and the mind-altering substances for reality manipulation of the 60s and 70s.

David Scott Hay, the author, crafts a complex storyline where the listener is completely and immediately immersed in the surrealism of the story and the aural overload of the audiobook. It took me several minutes to sync into the flow and appreciate the writing style of this author. At first, one is overwhelmed by various distorted sounds and then by the fragmented flow of the narrative. The writing style completely immerses the listener and is unexpected. The characters are developed through their perception and their perception of one another potentially obscuring their true essence. The horror is subtle in the sense that you as the listener must discern it – in other words it is not a big bad monster but rather experiences and situations.

The narrator, Brian Alan Hill, did an excellent job at projecting the surrealism and the continuity of each character and their voice. This enabled me to follow the story more easily. He was deliberate in his delivery and cadence. I am impressed with his skill and talent at delivering this audiobook in an engaging and captivating style.

On a side note – the cover of the book is very accurate to the storyline and feelings of the listener. It is definitely mind-blowing!

I am not a fan of imposing sounds in audiobooks but not having it in this book would have been a serious omission. I found the book to be interesting and immersive.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.
