Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Wild Ride

This was my first Hurwitz book and I have already put his others on my wish list. After the set-up this book is a wild ride -- the kind that makes you add an extra mile to your walk.

One of the best books I have listened to this year

I love Gregg Hurwitz, but this book was exceptional! When the story started I could never imagine all the twists and turns it would take. WOW!!!!! On the edge of my seat the entire book. Exceptional performance as always by Scott Brick
I cannot recommend this book enough!

I love Shep!

Everyone should have someone like Shep and Scott Brick's interpretation of the characters was spot on!

Can a book both good and bad?

This book, unlike the many others by the author is not his best work but I still liked it. While the action went from normal to slow to fast to slow back to normal..... kind of all over the place.
The plot was good, the storyline was ok, the ending was perfect.
What I really like about the author is his ability to include a subtext that gets you thinking and for me it was all about the lessons learned by the listener.
The descriptions of the location of the land he ends up as his inheritance was great. I lived in Susanville California for several years and know the areas described extremely well.
Get the book and listen to it, put yourself in his shoes and ask what you would have done, what would you have done different and then think about what says about you.

It’s something I normally do with these types of storylines.

Lastly, check out other books read by Scott Brick, he’s my favorite and I feel is really picky about what books he will and won’t read just as I am really picky which I will keep and which to return. I tend not to return many of his books.

Enjoy!

A gripping story of a father's love.

What lengths would you go to protect your family? This Is a fast paced novel of intrigue, and a compelling look at the devotion of a father to his child and what he will do to protect them. I can't wait for more from this author.

Surprising. Riveting. Well told.

Anything interpreted and performed by Scott Brick somehow sounds better automatically, but this one hooked me early. The last 2/3 of the action seemed non-stop. Well developed characters, enjoyably awful villains, it flew by.

What a Ride!

What can I say besides that I loved this book! Each page brought me closer to finding out what this mystery was all about (but that was part of the fun in reading it in the first place). The book has a lot to do about money and ambition, family, and doing the right thing. Kept me guessing until the very end. What a ride!

Wonderful

Ran across Gregg Herwitz by accident Now this is my third book of his and I can't wait to start the next one. Each of his books keep me on my toes from the very beginning.... The suspense, the mystery, the action. From cover to cover - I didn't want to stop listening.

Ending drawn out to long.

..and the author is a bit masochistic in the pain and suffering endured by the main characters, taking it well beyond what was necessary. The ending of the book became more painfull than enjoyable. Ended up fast forwarding through parts. In trying to be edgy the story suffered.
