Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Gregg Hurwitz's Most Claustrophobic Thriller

I've read almost everything Gregg Hurwitz has written -- including the hugely entertaining Orphan X series. This one felt like...work. I could only listen to it in short bursts, because it made me so awfully uncomfortable. If that was Hurwitz's goal, he's succeeded brilliantly. But it's both a painful experience -- and a book I had to finish, to find out the whats and the whys. I truly did not enjoy his putting Mike's daughter in so much constant danger. On the other hand, I was glad everytime Shep appeared. He was essentially Orphan X. He took care of business.

I quit

Reading some of the first reviews, I thought I should continue reading. Then I got to the ones who said what I was already thinking. I will quit wasting my time. Scott Brick can be too breathy and dramatic; and this is a perfect example. Not every paragraph can be that dramatic. I got very tired of it. Then when the author commented on "the middle class instead of the rich a**h***s;" I knew I was out of my element. That wasn't necessary.

I am sure Hurwitz/Brick will be a big hit, just not with us. I made it about 2 hours.

so-so.

became predictable pretty quickly. The precociousness of the eight-year-old daughter was annoying. unbelievable overall and wouldn't recommend.

Entertaining......

This book was an entertaining cat and mouse story. Never sure how it would end. Caution: Some gruesome parts but all and all pretty good.

One of Hurwitz's best!

I am a big Gregg Hurwitz fan. He had me hooked years ago with the unique telling of The Crime Writer. I love all the twists and turns in this and the slow unraveling of a fascinating past. Hurwitz writes as though he must know what it is like to be a parent also. I recommend this thriller.

Some Issues Here....

I am being intentionally vague because I hate placing a spoiler in a review.

I had some issues with this story. It felt unfinished to me, and some of the plot mechanisms used were unnecessary or ill suited to their intended purpose. There are characters that go under developed but we expect them to play a big role in the story, and the author does little to reconcile that.

The story moves along like a slow burning match you held too long and eventually burns you, but only because you forgot you were holding it.

Just know it is a slightly above mediocre effort that is not terrible, but not great.

Almost

Story lags until more than half way and narrator is laggy, too. It all comes together at the end.
