Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Possibly the BEST book I've read (listened to)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Amazing perfomance by Scott Brick, who is now my favorite voice actor, with Dick Hill coming in a very close second. The story was very well done and very believable. I couldn't stop listening. Thankfully I drive for about 7 hours a day so it didn't take me long to finish the story. Gregg Hurwitz is now in my top five. Survivor was also very good.

What was one of the most memorable moments of You're Next?

When Mike was was able to drop the bomb on William

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

He can portray a child and woman in a way which Dick Hill just isn't able to. It's not that he sounds effeminate but there is something subtle and subdued in his voice which allows me to picture a woman in my mind as he is speaking. Dick Hill's voice just doesn't have the range or quality I suppose.

Any additional comments?

I hope anyone who enjoys reading books or listening to them tries this one. I grew up on Tom Clancy, Michael Chricton and John Grisham novels but haven't done much reading over the last 10 plus years until I got a smart phone and became an Audible memeber. My love of "reading" has kicked back into high gear and I can't wait for the next great book to come my way.

Good story, but too dragged out

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

We listened this in the car on a a long trip. If I would have had other books available, I probably would have switched to another. It is a good story, but so long and dragged out -- we found ourselves saying "come on already!"

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes, because the movie would cut out the long dragged out parts.

Best book I've read this year

Granted it's only April but this is the best book I've read in a while, this year for sure. A rare five star review. I love Hurwitz' work, but this one was head and shoulders above the rest. Something about the combination of the story and the reader made this liquid gold. Scott Brick is unmatched as a reader, with an innate knack for timing, phrasing, and pacing. This story was emotional and made me laugh and cry. I didn't want it to end. I will miss these characters, especially Shep. This book is best suited for adult readers due to subject matter and language. Happy Reading!!

Yesterday and Today

Too much jumping from now and then. Parts of the old blurred into the new and not enough distinction to the change.
Tough if you have not read some of the others in this series. Still a great story and awesome finish.

Great story line and as always, highly engaging narration by Scott Brick. I'm ready for my next Gregg Hurwitz download.
