Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

So good

I ran out of orphan books to read, so I gave a few of his other titles a try. This one is by far the best. Seriously left me stressed out at times, but between the Great story and Scott brick, this one’s a winner.

Great story great narrator!!

If you’re looking for a good mystery with lots of suspense and interesting characters. Look no further. This is another great one. If you’re familiar with his other stand alone novels this one has some similarities. Story structure, character development and type of characters. Also the enemy of my enemy comes into play like a couple of his other. I really enjoyed it!!

One of the best audiobooks, ever.

This one has it all -- an absolutely riveting plot that just never lets go, coupled with a fantastic narration by Scott Brick, the best in the business. This was one of those books that you can just see happening -- which means it ranks as one of the top in the "it could happen" index, at least in fiction -- which means that the author did a darn good job of making it real. In listening to it, there's just no place to stop, which means that it also tops out on the "just five more minutes" scale. This was my first book by Greg Horowitz, either to read or listen to. Won't be my last.

Almost ruined with all the global warming BS

Would you recommend You're Next to your friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend. It is a decent story based on a completely unrealistic twist and it nearly ruined by all the bogus talk of dying polar bears, global warming, melting ice, Al Gore, blah blah blah.

Over dramatic narration

Actually a 2 because of the narration, but if you already like Brick, it won't bother you, so a three.

I know the Scott Brick lovers who read this will hit not helpful, but I can't stand his over dramatic pauses and labored narration. Made me think this was the worst book I'd listened to in a long while. He makes what is already implausible sound ridiculous.

The story was okay, different and definitely a big surprise. I probably wouldn't have hated it with a different narrator, so I give it 3 stars. So many stereotypes, but then stereotypes are based on common truths. Some really implausible situations typical for a mystery, no more thanaverage. That's why I love them so much.

Very slow going

I almost didn't finish this book. it was a very slow start and jerky story line. once you past that pivalital moment in the book it ended up being not so bad.

Finished It, Didn't Love It

It was okay. The story kept me interested, but the emoting over family loyalty was tiresome. And the narrator had this world-weary tone that he applied to every scene. He did the character of Shep well, though. I didn't stop listentng, though I thought about it a few times. Good commute book.

Another great new suspense writer for me.

Harlan Coben watch out in your stand alone suspense novels! This author is right there with you. I couldn't stop listening. I continued to listen while cooking, feeding cats, etc. I have grown tired of series books. After 15 or so books using same character that is enough. I want new, fresh different and Gregg hurwitz gives you that in spades. One of favorite occupations is browsing Audible looking for treasure and I hit jackpot here.

Story Just Not Finished

This was a really well written book that kept me in the edge of my seat. However, it bugs me to no end when an author spends hours of the book describing mundane items and then gets to the end of the book and doesn’t tell a thing about all the characters he has introduced so well during the story. It would only have taken about 5 more minutes on this 12 hour book.

It that doesn’t bother you, you’ll love this book!
