Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Thrilling Story, Captivating Characters

First of all, Scott Brick's narration was fantastic. I actually purchased this audiobook after seeing a video of Scott Brick mentioning it as a favorite of his.
I really enjoyed the main character of Michael, who was certainly a flawed character with a troubled past, but his heart was always in the right place. His buddy Shep was one of my favorites--another flawed character, but as loyal a friend as one could hope for. Their relationship actually brought to mind a meme I once read, "I good friend will bail you out of jail. A great friend will be sitting next to you saying, 'That was AWESOME.'" That seemed to be the kind of brotherly friendship they had, and it worked well with this story.

I definitely recommend this book, and I'll be certain to look into more by Hurwitz. He's a fantastic writer.

Great story line and very suspenseful

Would you consider the audio edition of You're Next to be better than the print version?

Maybe, but I only state this because I don't like Scott Brick as narrator

What did you like best about this story?

The suspense and not being able to see the twists in the story line ahead of time.

Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?

Not if I can help it. But I probably will because he does several books by authors that I like.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

It appears to me that the author probably doesn't have children or has even been around children. The communication between the parents and an eight year old was unrealistic. I suspect that this author may not have any children to understand that an eight year old does not think or act like an adult. Neither is it normal for parents to act like an eight year old dictates to the parents. If the child was in their early teens, the conversations would have been more realistic. Worse, the girl in this book came off as a self centered spoiled brat.

Engrossing, yet predictable

Any additional comments?

I love listening to Scott Brick; excellant narrator. This was also a very good book. I figured out why the lead character was being chased long before the end of the book, but I did not figure out all the twists and turns. Lots of character development and details. I really enjoyed this book. I have to say that at the end of it all, Shep was my favorite character.

Outstanding!

What made the experience of listening to You're Next the most enjoyable?

The story was interesting, there were many twists and turns. Didn't have those ho hum periods that you want to fast forward through.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As a rule, I won't download a book narrated by Scott Brick, but the synopsis and reviews of this book pushed me past my dislike of Brick. His style of reading, narrating was less annoying than usual.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! But, you know how real life is, and the ear buds just have to come out.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book!

Riveting!

This book was so engrossing, I couldn't stop listening! Sometimes I will fall asleep listening to a book. That didn't happen with this one. I couldn't even fall asleep when it was finished. I loved Hurwitz's characters, except for the ones I hated. The writing was excellent! It conveyed so much feeling of pathos and love and terror! I would love to read more from this author, but I don't know if my heart could stand it.

Scott Brick did a wonderful job reading the book! His portrayals were so convincing, and he was able to completely convey the emotions the author intended.

Wow!

Slow start, Great Finish!

I loved the character development. I felt all of Mike's emotions. The story development kept me guessing. I would recommend to anyone who lives a mystery.

Who's Gregg Hurwitz?

Wow, never read your books before, but will read more of what you write. Great book. On the edge of my seat, wanted the book to continue on because I was so wrapped up in the characters. Ignored everyone till I was finished. Keep writing Gregg!
