Publisher's summary

Mike Wingate, abandoned by his father at four and raised in foster care, is finally living the life he always dreamed of - he's happily married with a precocious 8-year-old daughter, and his construction company is about to finish a "green" housing development that will secure a solid future for them all. But then something from his own past, a past he doesn't even remember, comes back to visit terror upon him and his family.

Shady characters begin threatening Mike, and when he reports them, the police seem more interested in Mike's murky past than in protecting him. Now, with Mike, his wife Annabel and daughter Kat suddenly under attack from all sides, Mike turns to Shep, a dangerous man - and Mike's only true friend - from his childhood days in foster care. Together they will do whatever it takes to protect Mike's family against the hidden men behind the terrifying warning, "You're Next."

Critic reviews

"Excellent...keeps Mike (and the reader) on edge, wondering what is happening to him and how far it will escalate. Highly recommended to Hurwitz’s many faithful readers and to fans of Linwood Barclay, Harlen Coben, and Lisa Gardner." --Booklist

"The bad guys are suitably evil and the mystery satisfying, but Hurwitz’s real success is depicting Mike’s hard-won life as a husband, father, and successful businessman. A first-rate thriller!" --Library Journal (starred review)

"Hurwitz masterfully provokes feelings of extreme dread...Shep and Mike fight and sleuth their way through intensifying mayhem until they find the unexpected answer...." --Publishers Weekly

Adrenaline rush!

This is my second time listening to ‘You’re Next’ and normally I don’t write reviews. However, I felt compelled to in order to counteract negative reviews and because it is fantastic! It’s like a wild roller coaster ride. I’ve no idea why there are so many negative reviews. If you like action, fantastic come to life characters, then you will very much enjoy this book.

I don't think I have anything else by this author but this book had me up all hours because I could not stop listening. Thanks for putting this one on sale Audible - it was great. The story was exciting, sad and triumphant. Scott Brick was exceptional.

Gripping and intelligent

Would you listen to You're Next again? Why?

This would be a good return during a cabin fever.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick is what made this an excellent choice. Mr. Brick has only disappointed me once, but that was more due to editing. He is one of my all-time favorite performers.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Most likely the moment when you realize the indian heritage and the true meaning of why everyone is out to get this guy.

Late to the party, but so glad I got here!

I feel like as a fan of thrillers, I somehow missed the obvious with Gregg Hurwitz. This is just a well written, clever, interesting, and edge of your seat thriller that I really didn't see coming. The characters are well thought through and the plot just plain clever. Must run now...I've got more Hurwitz to catch up on - - YIPPEE!!

EXCITING MYSTERY...INTERESTING CHARACTERS

The story line of a tough childhood and how this guy manages to develop character traits that were fashioned by his orphanage roots keeps you listening and often on edge. Will his next encounter with danger cause him to abandon his best friend and or his family? Or will he remain true to his hard earned principles and do the right thing even when it hurts? His best friend is a felon who you will learn to love. You just can't get enough of this guy.

If you're like me, you get bored with long listens that lack action, and with writers that fill pages with never ending descriptions of irrelevant things. This novel has a small dose of writer's drivel, but it has enough action and suspense to make it well worth your time.

Scott Brick does well with some of his voice changes to help with the character distinctions...nice job with the best friend. But overall, I found him overly dramatic too often. I really enjoy hearing multiple narrators. I listen to several books per month and I've really come to appreciate a combination of male and female narrators. I think it really adds value, and I hope to find more books that offer that feature. Cheers, Ken
