Publisher's summary

He is a good man, a brilliant corporate executive, an honest, handsome family man admired by men and desired by women. But a lifetime ago Ben Tyson was a lieutenant in Vietnam. There the men under his command committed a murderous atrocity -- and together swore never to tell the world what they had done.

Now the press, army justice, and the events he tried to forget have caught up with Ben Tyson. His family, his career, and his personal sense of honor hang in the balance. And only one woman can reveal the truth of his past -- and set him free.

Critic reviews

"The flashbacks to Hue, the pre-trial investigation (involving an attractive female major), the court-martial proceedings, the emotions of the principal characters and the soul-sickness wrought by war (which is the story's effective subtext) all are depicted with marvelous vividness." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great Listen!

It’s been awhile since I have enjoyed a book as much as I did this one. It’s kind of like “A Few Good Men” meets a Grisham novel. The main character does not always behave in a believable fashion and I had some issues with convenient plot developments but the performance and experience more than made up for these deficiencies. Recommended.

Mature Balance

This is now my favorite DeMille work. The characters are believable, the settings are substantial, the plot flows naturally and the protagonists evoke empathy.

Made of Brick

I am no Scott Brick fan. In fact, I have shied from the purchase of several audiobooks upon seeing Brick as the narrator. After listening to Word of Honor, however, I am drawing toward membership in the Brick fan club. Wow -- his narration is so captivating in this book. Every character comes to life; his pacing is brilliant; and he brings the emotion out so well I was mesmerized. Of course, narration goes only so far if the story lacks, but here Nelson DeMille has crafted a wonderful tale. I have seen one or two movies adapted from DeMille works, but this was my first venture into a DeMille book. It will be the first of several, I am sure, as I was hooked from the start. It is a long work, but it never got boring. The way DeMille writes -- how he keeps the story moving while including so much detail, especially given the military setting -- I was riveted. I had no vested interest in this title at purchase (as I said, I am typically barely luke-warm to Scott Brick), but it is easily one of the best audiobooks I have ever experienced. If you enjoy courtroom dramas, military-themed fiction, historical fiction, suspense, well-written conflict -- or if you simply love memorable characters who spring to life -- treat yourself to Word of Honor. Bravo Mr. Brick and Mr. DeMille.

Wow! Just Wow!

This was THE audiobook that I just did not want to end! I have listened to literally hundreds of books over the years, and this is up there with the all time best maybe THE best. I will admit that I have enjoyed just about everything DeMille has written (except some airline pilot story), and I think Scott Brick is the audiobook version of Sinatra. But this was a magnificent listen, I found myself avoiding my weeken golf game to listen, taking extra time riding to work and even taking long lunches just get get a few more minutes of it. I rate this up there with Demille's best!

Long but Worth It

It's a very long book. It took about 7-8 chapters to really pique my interest. I started reading this book in the traditional way several years ago but couldn't seem to get into it from the beginning. However, have finally finished it, it was well worth the commitment to get the story. Definitely a different approach to story tell than I was used to.from DeMille. I wouldn't read it again, but I'd go see the movie....that really SHOULD be made.

Gripping and to real to be fictional.

I have 60 books in my Library but non that made me feel I was part of the story. Highly recommend to all who have served.

Better than first time

I read this book 20 years ago in ”paper” form and I liked it enough to read all of DeMille’s books. Now I am re-reading in audio form and I liked it even more! It is exquisite in form and content and I decided to now purchase and listen to all of his books again. My favorite genre. Enjoy
