Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

A Great Read!

I loved this author and reader. Though the story was a little James Bondish it still held my interest. The characters are enjoyable. I read earlier reviews which said this is not as good as his earlier books...Lions Gate and Night Fall. I don't know about that but I intend to find out....and I hope that reviewer is correct because I have a lot to look forward to. It is great to discover a new author.

Thought it would never end

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Only if they were intent on reading the entire John Corey series. This book is, well, boring.
The fiendish plot of our villain is laid out for us at the beginning of the book. Then we wait as our hero plods along until he figures things out. I think it would have been more enjoyable if we were kept in the dark until the end too.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott Brick is an excellent reader! If I'd just read the book, I probably would have skipped a couple hundred pages.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not. too slow.

loved it

I loved this book, I especially liked the characters and the way the husband drove his wife crazy with his sense of humor. This is one that kept me awake because I just had to see how it ended

I like DeMille but not the music

The pausing with music for dramatic effect cheapens the story. Almost as if it’s a soap opera. It’s a book. Not a 1940’s radio show.

Another great book

Where does Wild Fire rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Wildfire was a GREAT listen. Naturally, Scott Brick was awesome and remains my very favorite narrator!!!! This kept me interested all the way to the bitter end.

What other book might you compare Wild Fire to and why?

Of course, The Lion's Game ranks right there with this one.

Too L-O-N-G

Could be cut in half and you would miss nothing. Didn't see the abridged version when I purchased this title.

Could Identify

I spent over a decade with the Department of Energy's Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST), and many of our scenarios were similar, if not identical, to the plot of this book. Unbeknownst to many of the American public, enriched uranium went missing from one of DOE's nuclear materials plants; enough to make a dirty IED. The suitcase bombs mentioned in this book were real. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the DOE put into place a program called "Safing", which was intended to obtain all of the "former" Soviet Union's nuclear warheads; however, many nuclear weapons and warheads were hidden away in the Ukraine to keep them out of our hands.

Good story.
