Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

well paced adventure novel

If you've read any previous DeMille novels with John Corey you already know one reason you'll enjoy this book. Corey is back with a prefect blend of sarcasm and wit. Corey's mouth inevitably gets him into trouble and its lots of fun to tag along.

Kare Mayfield is back too, her character is more fleshed-out and enjoyable. With fewer meaningless romantic scenes than The Lion's Game, Kate's character has more purpose and fits in very well.

Wild Fire keeps the pace and the questions coming. The modern day situation and questions that make up the novel are well thought out and make it easy to buy into the story.

Scott Brick does a wonderful job reading (as always) and adds to the excellent quality of the book. Bottom line: I highly recommend Wild Fire (and The Lion's Game - which you'll want to listen to first).

Bit of a disappointment

What did you like best about Wild Fire? What did you like least?

Predictable. John Corey's wisecracks get old.

Would you recommend Wild Fire to your friends? Why or why not?

OK, but there are better.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Differentiates characters well.

Was Wild Fire worth the listening time?

It was OK. We use it to pass the time while driving.

Any additional comments?

No

Amazing!

I couldn’t wait to get and my car and go to work just so I could listen to this book. The characters and plot keep you wanting more and the narrator does an excellent job. I would definitely recommend any of Nelson DeMille’s books!

Got me after a while

I had trouble with Scott Brick in this novel at first. His New York accent in Wild Fire didn't sit well after hearing his sometimes maudlin narrating in other books. Seems he reads most of what I listen to. Although highly theatrical, his Dean Koontz "Frankenstein" was a little over the top for me,

But after a few hours of increasing engagement in Wild Fire, I became a renewed Scott Brick fan and a Nelson DeMille fan. Atmosphere-wise, this is pure 1950's style cop thriller brought into the current century. A little stereotypical in his presentation of characters, but quite absorbing. And the storyline is intriguing and likely entirely possible. (Am listening to Scott Brick now read "No One Would Listen by Harry Markopolos" ...about the Bernie Madoff scandal, and he is quite good.)

FANTASTIC!

This is one of the books where you want to get to the end to see how it is going to turn out yet... You never want the book to end because it is so well written that you want it to go on and on! Great story line, fantastic attention to detail and in true DeMille style, keeps you engrossed from start to finish! Another Must Read!!!

A bit unpredictable and a bit long

As the final book in the John Corey series, I was pretty excited to listen to this book.

However, I found this to be the weakest of the three in the series - the dialogue was predictable, the exchanges between the characters was like something out of a bad action flick (i.e. the bad guy talks long enough to give the good guy time to ruin the bad guy's plan) and the story just a wee-bit far fetched.

But, that isn't to say that I didn't enjoy it....I just didn't enjoy it as much as the others.

Captivating, Crude, Funny

While the language might have it's crude moments, the plot will captivate you, and the "witty banter" between the main characters may have you laughing out loud. Detective or stand-up comic, hmmmmmmm, hard to tell. Does a "Wild Fire" response scenario really exist? This book will have you wondering.

John Cory will make you laugh

Nelson DeMille crafted a well thought through book and I enjoyed the Audible version very much. Scott Brick narrates so well and has the perfect voice for John Cory! John is true to his smart aleck, smart mouth and fast thinking self. His wife is loosening up a bit about the bureau. Well done for a post 9/11 novel!

Wildfire

Outstanding...

If you enjoy the other novels starting with Plum Island that you first meet John Corry this one is the best of them all.
