Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels is having a bad week. Her live-in boyfriend has left her for his personal trainer, chronic insomnia has caused her to max out her credit cards with late-night home shopping purchases, and a frightening killer who calls himself "The Gingerbread Man" is dumping mutilated bodies in her district.

While avoiding the FBI and its moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Jack and her binge-eating partner, Herb, must catch the maniac before he kills again...and Jack is next on his murder list.

Whiskey Sour is the first book in the bestselling Jack Daniels series, full of laugh-out-loud humor and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Crack another case with Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels.

Critic reviews

Dual voices add considerable interest to this debut novel....The production's conversations sound more like those of a radio play than a reading, and one gets the feeling that both actors are having fun. This is a fine series opener." ( AudioFile)

Narration so bad I almost couldn't finish

Between the over the top Chicago accents and multiple narrators I found the narration more of a distraction than anything. It didn't help the story or make it better in any way. Terrible, terrible narration. The story was OK. Somehow I expected it to be funnier. I've listened to one of this author's short stories before and it was really, really witty and funny. I was hoping for that in this book but it really wasn't funny at all. And the killer was way over the top considering the cause for his acting out. How he was wronged simply didn't equate to how he acted out.

Outstanding

What made the experience of listening to Whiskey Sour the most enjoyable?

I can't think of any other writer that I enjoy listening to more. The stories are always excellent, well thought out with characters you care about and actually seem real and most of all they have a sense of humor. Really funny books considering the subject matter. The books are very gory (this is the first one in the series), but they are about a serial killer.

What other book might you compare Whiskey Sour to and why?

The rest of the series is excellent not one of them has let me down. Perfect read for the beach.

What does Susie Breck and Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Both Susie Breck and Dick Hill give performances that bring the characters to life to the point that you really care about them.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nothing really moved me but there's more than a few tense moments that's for sure.

Decent story...50/50 performance

This was my first J.A. Konrath/Jack Daniels. It was a decent story, entertaining, and I might read (note: read not listen to) another one, but frankly, Susie Breck's performance detracted from the listen for me. Her voice was grating, and she tended to overact. Dick Hill was great as usual. I think I could listen to him read the phone book and find it entertaining. I might recommend this to someone if they were able to get it on sale.

Good thriller with excellent narrators!

I admit I thought this was a cozy mystery so it sat in my library a long time. I’m so glad I took the time to listen. Ignore the silliness of naming a hard-edged, female Chicago detective “Jack Daniels” (short for “Jackie”) and the cocktail-themed title. This book was exciting and edgy, and the masterful narration was outstanding!

Great Discovery

After reading Whiskey Sour, and getting to know 'Jack' Daniels, it was an easy choice to purchase the other seven books in the series. Excellent story with a great job of reading by Dick Hill and Susie Breck.

More gruesome than expected

I thought with main character named Jack Daniels the book would be funny and a lighter weight thriller. But it turned out to be more gruesome than I expected. However the writing, character development and excellent narration kept my interest. There are light moments and some gallows humor. Hard to decide between 3 and 4 stars.

Highly recommended Defective Story

This is the second book in this detective series that I have read so far. I accidentally read one further in series first but am now reading them in sequential order. This is the first in series. I have thoroughly enjoyed the authors other books all horror books that I have read so far also. I listened to the Audible version of this book and thought it was well done.

Entertaining Book

What did you love best about Whiskey Sour?

The book was funny and kept you in suspense.

What does Susie Breck and Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Having a female and male reader was great. Sometimes it sounds odd when you have a reader trying to pretend to be the opposite sex. In this case it wasn't an issue. Also Ms. Breck really brought out the character of Jack Daniels.

Any additional comments?

Loved the book. Plan to buy more with audible.

Fast Moving

First of all, it's nice to have a few audiobooks that do not require a >8 hr. time investment, and this one comes in around 6 hours. All the elements are here, a really creepy serial killer, a smart, fun heroine to root for and some unpleasantly graphic descriptions of the crimes. I found the female narrator's short, choppy delivery rather distracting and/or annoying, although I did get used to it after a few hours. On the plus side, I am hard of hearing and the words were well enunciated, therefore I missed no dialogue.
