Regency England, August 1812: Sebastian St. Cyr’s plans to escape the heat of London for a honeymoon with his new bride, Hero Jarvis, are shattered when the murdered body of Hero’s good friend Gabrielle Tennyson is discovered drifting in a battered boat at the site of a long-vanished castle known as Camlet Moat.

Missing and also presumed dead are Gabrielle’s two young cousins.

Still struggling to define the nature of their new marriage, Sebastian and Hero find themselves occasionally working at cross-purposes as their investigation uncovers dark secrets at the heart of the Tennyson family and an enigmatic young French lieutenant who is concealing mysteries of his own.

Sebastian and Hero’s race to unmask a ruthless killer and unravel the puzzle of the missing children puts both their lives and their growing love for each other at risk as they’re threatened by powerful men in high places … and by a tall, dark stranger who may hold the key to Sebastian’s own parentage.

Critic reviews

“Like Georgette Heyer, Harris delves deep into the mores of Regency England, but hers is a darker, more dangerous place.” ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Complicated plots and finely detailed characters are yet again the author's hallmark.

A murder mystery wrapped in the myth of Camelot.

I've read all these & love them...this last is great & I like the development of Seb & Hero...nicely done as they slowly work into a relationship & complications w Jarvis...Davina Porter is as always amazing in all her voices I forget she's even female!

Another great story!

The quality of the writing, the rich characters, and the historical context make this worth reading. There are exciting moments, but the plot drags in many places, enough to make it tedious. Narrator is a skilled actress and brings each character to life. Previous books in this series were better.

Beautifully written, but the story drags

I was personally relieved when, as the storyline progressed, the author stopped littering the pages with senseless gore and violence, and breathy sex scenes. The characters in themselves are compelling and charismatic, and the plots are intricate without being overly implausible , and I love the details about the regency period and Hero’s deeply-rooted civic-mindedness. It is an intelligent mystery series and doesn’t pander to anyone by having 2-dimensional and cliched heroes and heroines.

Less melodrama, more mystery
