Publisher's summary

M. J. Holliday has the unusual ability to talk to the dead. But when it comes to a vengeful ghost and a mysterious drowning, this time she may be in over her head....

That sinking feeling...

Kidwella Castle in northern Wales is rumored to be haunted by a deadly ghost - the Grim Widow, who allegedly drowns unsuspecting guests in the castle’s moat. Not long after M. J. and her crew arrive at the castle to film their ghost-hunting cable TV show, Ghoul Getters, two new victims are added to the Widow’s grisly roster. Fear ripples through the castle, especially when it’s discovered that the victims may have had help into their watery graves from the land of the living. The local inspector suspects a father-son serial killing team, but M. J. thinks that theory is all wet. To catch the true culprit she will need to dive deep into the castle’s past and bring some long buried secrets to the surface.

Terrible Plot

What would have made What a Ghoul Wants better?

The premise of the story is fine but the author doesn't seem to have any concept of natural human reactions. Consequently, every character is someone you want to be killed in the story. Rather than being 'in the story' while listening, I was irritated by stupid dialogue and plot.

Would you ever listen to anything by Victoria Laurie again?

No.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Eileen Stevens?

Yes. I didn't care a lot for the male characters but her voice quality is good.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

irritation and disappointment

Simplistic

What disappointed you about What a Ghoul Wants?

The book seemed to be written for YA but isn't advertised as such. The characters came across as flakes.

Has What a Ghoul Wants turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Eileen Stevens?

Not sure - can't decide if the narrator was the issue or the dialogue.

Any additional comments?

If this had been described at a YA book, it would have been pretty good. But as a book for adults, I expected the dialogue to be better.
