Publisher's summary

A woman with a murky past who kills herself - or was it murder? A spoiled kid awash in gambling debt who thinks he can beat the system. A lovely woman whose life is about to splinter into a thousand fragments. A professional shoplifting ring working for the Mob, racking up millions from stolen goods. A wandering husband, rich and ruthless. A dirty cop so entrenched on the force he is immune to exposure. A sinister gangster, conscienceless and brutal. A lonely widower mourning the death of his lover, desperate for answers, which may be worse than the pain of his loss. A private detective, Kinsey Millhone, whose 38th-birthday gift is a punch in the face that leaves her with two black eyes and a busted nose. And an elegant and powerful businessman whose dealings are definitely outside the law: The magus at the center of the web. V: Victim. Violence. Vengeance.

Critic reviews

"Sure to satisfy." (USA Today)

“The author has hit a high mark with her latest offering, a complex tale of love, betrayal, ambition, and, of course, murder…The only bad thing: There are just four letters left in the alphabet.” (The Associated Press)

“One of Kinsey Millhone’s best outings...must reading for Grafton fans.” (The Globe and Mail (Canada))

Best in a long time

Sue's early alphabet books were great, then they were mediocre, especially the later letters of the alphabet. I was going to quit reading rather than finish the series. This book was fabulous. I found myself thinking about the characters and what was going to happen. In my daily life! Amazing. I was so worried the policeman Pritty was going to get away with corruption once again.

My first audio book....

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book to a friend. I was not drawn in by the story or the narrator.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sue Grafton? Why or why not?

I don't think I'll try another Grafton novel. The narration made the story seem simple and ordinary.

What aspect of Judy Kaye’s performance would you have changed?

The narration made the characters seem cartoonish.

Was V Is for Vengeance worth the listening time?

Only because I could knit whilst I was listening. Otherwise 15 hours is a long time to spend on a book.

Any additional comments?

I prefer my own voices for the characters in a novel. I am not sure audio books are for me.

Love Kinsey!

Sue Grafton de ropes characters do well and so believably. Kinsey and her landlord are funny as well as touching. The problems Kinsey discovers is complex and at times funny.

First rate! The latest is with the greatest.

Years ago I read the first seven novels of the Kinsey Millhone series. Each of those were in my own personal "classics" hall of fame. There were always page turners. When the audio version was released for V is for Vengeance, I was wondering if newest release would be on par with the earlier ones, as several of my recent reads proved to not be quite as good as some of those same author's earlier works.

It took a while

I'm a Kinsey Millhone fan and enjoyed her again. However, it felt like it took a while to get to the main story because of the technique Sue Grafton used this time. There were so many characters and so much detail surrounding them that it was difficult sometimes to remember who was who. Once the pieces began to come together and there was more focus on Kinsey, I liked it better. Judy Kaye was terrific as always.

Fascinated as usual

What did you love best about V Is for Vengeance?

I loved how the story held my interest all the way through to the end.

What did you like best about this story?

I was held in suspense.

Which scene was your favorite?

The best scene was seeing how Kinsey got out of eating Rosie's horrible sweetmeat ethnic meal. GAK!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I would love to do that, but alas, duty calls.

Any additional comments?

I detected a departure from Ms. Grafton's usual storyline. Once I caught on to what she was doing, I was delighted!
