Publisher's summary

There's always one more grave to dig.

Lately, life has been unnaturally calm for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband, Bones. They should have known better than to relax their guard, because a shocking revelation sends them back into action to stop an all-out war.…

A rogue CIA agent is involved in horrifying secret activities that threaten to raise tensions between humans and the undead to dangerous heights. Now Cat and Bones are in a race against time to save their friends from a fate worse than death…because the more secrets they unravel, the deadlier the consequences. And if they fail, their lives - and those of everyone they hold dear - will be hovering on the edge of the grave.

Woah! What a ride!

What can I say. Frost really outdid herself with this series. Rarely have I picked up a series and made it through so many of the books because after book 3 the story usually loses its flavor and story development lack. Frost does an amazing job of enthralling you into the story and into the lives of Cat and Bones. Each book is a separate adventure and this one was one of best and I can not think of a greater way to end the series. Tavia does an excellent job on her read making me feel like the characters were right in front of me. Awesome and def recommend the series!

Until Again

Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened, right? Okay, Dr Seuss, I am trying to heed your advice, but I am so sad that this series has come to an end. Since I have binged this entire series back to back over the past two weeks, I feel so invested and attached to these characters as though they are my own friends.

Up from the Grave is book 7 in the Night Huntress series. It is the final story from this series. There is one more book after this, book 7.5, but that one is just outtakes and alternate scenes from the first four books in the series so even though I will be listening to that book, this book is the end. Overall, I don’t feel that the series was predictable up until this book. There were still unseen twists and turns, but I guessed multiple things in this book before they happened. Up from the Grave was very emotional. I was seething from anger in one part and actually crying in another part. It also stressed me out at certain parts. One thing that I am really disappointed in was the fact that one of the main bad guys got off too easily. For all of the atrocities he committed and for how horrible of a person he was, I really needed him to have a painful death. I needed for him to feel a fraction of the pain he caused others. I needed vengeance. I felt cheated by that.

I highly recommend this series. This is a series that I will read and listen to again. The same narrator was used for the entire series with exception of book 4.5, the novella One for the Money. It was really weird to have another narrator for Cat & Bones so thankfully that only happened once. Tavia Gilbert narrated the rest of the books and she did a fantastic job. It was so great that all of the characters had unique and distinct voices and accents. I can still hear Bones in my head. Hopefully that sticks around for a bit because I am not ready to say goodbye.

I’m going to read the spin off series books, but I am going to read something else in between as a palette cleanser so I can be prepared for their to be different main characters.

4.5 Stars.

What's with the accents?

I love this series.
However having had Ms. GILBERT do such an outstanding job on all the books before this one, made it really difficult to get through this when she changed a couple of the characters voices. Unfortunately Bones sounds more like Ian or Spade losing his cockney accent, and Tyler doesn't quite have the exotic flair that he does in book six.
I wish they could do a "do-over" 😁
Great plot and great writing as usual.

Thanks JF for This Series!

If you've been a fan of J. Frost like I have, this book is an automatic download. This book is the closing to the Cat and Bones saga. It was another action packed adventure with Cat being the stubborn, bad a** vampire conquering justice with kick a** vampire Bones. I won't spoil you with details but I just wanted to write this review to say thanks to the author for entertaining me for hours with this series. I hope there are spin off books from some of the characters in the near future because I didn't want this book to be the last of Frost's vampire world. Hopefully we can see Ian or Varitass' love story? That would be awesome!

I am so sorry to see the story of cat and bones wind up. It was too short.

Saving the Best for Last…

What did you love best about Up from the Grave?

Frost does it again; she consistently maintains a balance of intrigue and emotions that have made her books bestsellers. She always makes it easy to recommend her books to anyone for she writes in a style that permits one and all to flow into her, (the books) world. Superb descripting of scenes allows the reader to fly into and be a part of it. She is one of those writers that I’ve read that allow me to stop, close my eyes, and then visualize what is going on around the characters.
I had mixed feeling knowing that this was to be the last Cat & Bones book, listening to the last chapter I felt like waving to them and wishing them a, “Bon Voyage!” myself. I must give kudos on how the ending was constructed, it seemed well thought out. It is, excitedly, structured in such a way that allows the readers to know, that though this is an ending, it is not assuredly NOT the end. Keep going Jeaniene!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Besides Cat? That would be to hard to say in this book Frost really did a great job of allowing her characters to stand on their own. If Had to pick I'd go with Ian (the sod!).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Well the ending had me feeling like old friends were leaving and I wasn't going to see them for a very long time.

Farewell Cat and Bones

Didn't realize this was the last book of the series, until I read the publishers review, but it's a great book to wrap-up the characters and the series. Everyone from past books seem to be involved with the pursuit of one special little girl. If you have followed the series, then this one is a must listen. I probably wouldn't start with this book, cause of all the characters involved from the other books (background is needed to appreciate it)
I was glad to see the series end before the characters and writing became stale. So many authors these days drag out a series too long, to the point of the writer and reader loosing interest. I would say this one worked out just right.

Still worth a read but a bit lazy

I’ve read the night huntress series maybe 3-4 times so far. When I was in high school I was obsessed. When I was in college it was still entertaining. And now I listened to them on the metro all in a row, including the spin offs. Frost is very very good at writing the initial chapter of each story but after awhile they become a bit repetitive. I may not have enjoyed this book as much as the others, but it’s still a good book. And the series is one of my all time favorites.

After this point beware of SPOILERS

Problems I had with this book:
-ok so we aren’t going to explore her daughters powers? You introduce a brand new cool species and you don’t go beyond mentioning its existence? This is just like how frustrating I was with some aspects of the Vlad spin off.
-the whole book is just recycled storylines from her other books in this series!!!! Cat KNEW bones had the regenerative power and she still fell into a hopeless depression convinced he was dead? Even if he was dead her reaction was quite pathetic. Lost respect for Cat. Her flaws used to make sense and when she was in the dark I usually was as well. But now I couldn’t stop thinking “Cat you idiot do you have zero ability to see below the surface of things?? You yourself have used the shapeshifter ruse SEVERAL TIMES AND YOU STILL FALL FOR IT???”
-I’m so tired of the stupid protection-feminism-logic argument. CAN WE NOT. Just... please be more creative
-many of the characters who I once thought so creative and thought would get interesting back stories such as Marie, Ian and Fabian were just... static. I feel like fans wanted another book so bad that Jeaniene gave them what they (we) wanted. This has happened to almost all of my favorite series.

While these points seem harsh I don’t regret the purchase. I won’t read or listen to it again because it’s more of a listing of events then character development and whatnot. If you’ve been a fan of the series since the beginning as I have it’s worth a read. Just for closure :) thank you Jeaniene Frost for such a wonderful universe.

The end of a great series

This was a strange book and while i liked it, there's a plot line that just doesn't really fit. The whole book felt like a lot of fan service. I think that it could have been OK, but I didn't buy it all the way. They start off trying to figure out how to get to Madigan, after a quiet period for Cat and Bones. Things quickly get out of control, and they use their allies to try and save themselves and prevent a war. That's the quick synopsis. There's a lot of characters in this book that get a quick nod or shout out. It's very fan servicey. It wasn't that it was poorly done, but it was just glossed over. The story was a little weak, and I don't know that there was enough for a full book here. It felt rushed and parts weren't fully developed. I gave it 4 stars overall, but Tavia Gilbert's performance was top notch as always, and it does pull everything together. If you've read the other books in the series, this is a must read, but it doesn't break new ground.

*Spoilers Below*

The Katie story line was pretty silly. The reaction by Cat felt really over the top. I get the basic concept that she now has a 'daughter' but the whole I must protect her at all costs even though I hardly met her felt very forced. Even my wife rolled her eyes at it. I get the whole parenting situation, but this felt forced because it was a paranormal romance and Cat's mom was a bad mother, so Cat needs a daughter so she can be a good mom didn't work. Having her probably be Tate's kid as well made me really roll my eyes, and I didn't think he was all that likable of a character, but maybe he was? I'm still looking forward to see where she takes her storytelling next.
