Audie Award Winner, Mystery, 2014
Andy Carpenter's accountant, Sam Willis, receives a surprise call from Barry Price, a friend he hasn't spoken to in years. Barry needs Sam's financial acumen and Andy's legal expertise. But when Sam almost runs over an injured dog on the way to Barry's house, he can't drive off without waiting for help. By then, Barry's taken off on a private airplane headed to who-knows-where. Soon after they learn that Barry's plane has crashed, and they come to the terrifying realization that Sam was also supposed to have been killed on that plane. Barry was in far more serious trouble than either of them knew, and for Sam and Andy, the trouble is only beginning.

"An exciting intrigue story of twists, turns, and the rehabilitation of a loyal canine friend, Unleashed (audio) is a treat for mystery lovers and dog lovers alike!" (The Midwest Book Review)
We listen to a lot of audio books and the Andy Carpenter Series is by far our favorite.
Each book in the series reveals a little bit more of the "fringe" characters. It was great to learn a little more about Sam in this book. There are alsway enough plot twists to keep you guessing and engaged. You can't help but smile when the whole team get's back together with each new release.
I can't EVEN imaging another voice reading this series. Grover brings the perfect amount of sarcasm, wit and self deprecation to Andy's character. His voices are consistent across the series from Marcus' grunts to Hike's paranoia. Excellent reader!
This is a LAUGH OUT LOUD series! My husband and I listened poolside in Hawaii and when we got up to swim, a couple next to us asked "What are you listening to? You are laughing a lot!" We highly recommend this series to friends and family looking for a funny, entertaining and easy read/listen.
Obsessive reader, 6-10 books a week, chosen from Member reviews. Fact & fiction, subjects from the Tudors to Tookie, Harlem to Hiroshima, Huey Long to Huey Newton. In-depth fair reviews - from front to BLACK!!!
I fell in love with this series several years ago and ended up listening to all of the books available in audio format - back to back. However, the best way to really enjoy them is to do one every 6 to 12 months, so you forget why you liked the books so much in the first place! Once again, here we get a great crime mystery and likeable characters, combined with humorous writing and smart dialogue. Narrator Grover Gardner continues to provide the perfect delivery. I sincerely hope that when the two works in this series (currently not available as audiobooks) are recorded, the producers don't ruin the Andy Carpenter magic by changing narrators. Or, even worse - horror of horrors! - allow some "A-List" actor to READ (as opposed to NARRATE) the new books. A sure-fire way to bite this great series of man and mutt in the butt (pun INTENDED)! 😄
I listen to books to be entertained... my favorite genre is a "Legal Thriller" I have actually been a member since 2001. Love my books!
I love everything about this series, the narrator's voice, the author's sense of humor. It is like candy for my ears. I am certain that I will always buy books by this author. I enjoy them immensely.
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
I love Andy Carpenter, he is so funny. The story was good, although it is basically the same story as the previous ones and if you have gotten this far in the series, you know what I mean. I will read Andy stories anyway, he is always fun. One thing I don't like is that he does the point of view from way to many characters and then kills them off. Love the narrator, he is Andy.
I never read the print version but I love the reader and I love the silly stories!!!
He is one of the best of all of the readers. I follow him around.
Love the performance with. Laugh with the story made it a fun book I couldn't put. Down. Realy were too many people to follow, guess I wasn't smart enough . Or a little confused . Not one of the. Best of o andies but still Real good & I'd read again
... is right on and he says it so well. This is a thoroughly delightful series. Lots of murders but not much mayhem. Interesting cast of characters as seen through Andy's eyes. And Grover Gardiner IS Andy.
Please read series from the beginning, "Open and Shut". You'll be glad you did.
This review holds for all the Andy Carpenter stories. I love them to bits. I literally laugh out loud at some of Andy's comments. He is a very likable character who despite the pretense of only caring about himself, will always put himself out when he finds a friend or deserving person in need. He is both detective and lawyer and so his stories include twists and turns arising from investigations. Andy is brilliant in the courtroom, so despite going into every court case as the underdog, he always comes out on top in the end.
I am not a pet owner or lover, but I love the affection that Andy has for his dog Tara and his Foundation for lost or rescued dogs. There are a number of terrific characters that turn up in each book in the series. The best for me are Marcus, a huge and nearly mute man who acts as security for Andy, and Edna the crossword guru who rarely lifts a finger to do any work around the office.
These books are original, but they have a tiny sprinkle of John Grisham (court room tensions and story twists), a sprinkle of Michael Connelly (well crafted mystery and crime) and liberal sprinkle of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series (laugh out loud humour and lovable quirky characters).
Occasionally audio book performers just read them book out loud. Not Grover Gardner, to me he is Andy Carpenter. He performs the story, put just the right inflections in and reading at just the right pace. He has what I think is a very believable US east coast accent, I love the way he says corwfee (coffee). But I am not American and so I am only guessing that is how they speak in that part of the world.
I enjoy the Andy Carpenter series because I like the humor and the reliable story lines.
Grover Gardner has a voice that makes me want to be his best friend.
