Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Maddening, funny, sad, satisfying.

I enjoyed every minute of the story. Me. Whelan did an excellent job narrating. I could feel Elizabeth's emotions.

A Fantastic Story!

I can't ever recall reading a Nora Roberts book though I have read one or 2 JD Robb books which were futuristic mysteries. This book was, in a word, amazing.

The story started with a long overdue, in my opinion, teenage rebellion which led to disastrous consequences. After the stage was set, the book fast forwarded 12 years and enter our hero, Brooks. He is not your typical hero. Rather, he has a wonderful demeanor and affability that simply has you admiring him. And to watch Liz, now known as Abigail, slowly, very slowly transform, is one of the sweetest and endearing storylines I've read in a long, long time.

As Brooks is the Chief of Police, there are many subplots that turn this from a novel to more of a real-life type story.

Not that I didn't enjoy some of the Lieutenant Eve Dallas books...they were truly fictional. This book has a more "real" feel to it and was masterfully written.

Julia Whelan did a wonderful job narrating. So, yes, this is definitely a book you can and should read.

Great performance; implausible story

Considering the author made such a point of describing the main character as a genius-level intellectual, she was ridiculously and unbelievably naive about so many things as to ruin the story, in my opinion. But the narrator’s flawless performance kept me listening to the end.

One of Nora Roberts Better Books

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

Julia Whelan is a great narrator. She embodied the character well.

Any additional comments?

Nora Roberts is one of those authors that I have a love/hate relationship with her work. Some of her books are great! Some of them, just eh. You never know what you're going to get with her. This one was pretty good. I liked it from the beginning. Likeable characters and a plot that moved at a good speed. If you like this one, I'll also recommend Carolina Moon.
