Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Somewhat predictable but good nontheless.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It captured my interest and held it. Definitely recommend it!

Really Good - You WILL want to know how it ends

On the edge of my seat for most of the book! Almost 5 stars (wish I could log this as a well deserved 4.6 stars).
1) Fantastic storyline that engages you immediately.
2) Appropriately paced (with exception of that quick-romance most novels are known for)
3) The main character is well developed. You understand them, feel for them, want what they want.
4) Really liked how seriously frustrating you become with the supporting characters and while I don't want to 'spoil' the reader's look into the book, I will say that it will remind you how nosy townsfolk can be - both pesky and dangerous.
Minus 1 star) The remaining portion of the book begged for some action and we wanted to know the villain's thought as they came face-to-face with the past. But the action was short lived, lacking its full dramatic luster.

Loved it!

This was my first Nora Roberts book. I selected it based on the reviews and am glad I did. Loved both the characters and story.

You’ll miss out if you don’t

A great story, I was sad when I came to the end. I wanted to keep reading and see what was next. All good things come to an end

A really nice escape from my hectic life

I've been especially busy lately with a wide variety of tasks on my list and found listening to this story an opportunity to focus on something other than my responsibilities and the stress related to them. This book captured my attention in the first few pages. Carving out an hour each day to listen while I knit, fold laundry, or cook has been my self-care time. I found the characters interesting, their actions and reactions believable, and greatly enjoyed the scenes that included the dog Bert.
Perhaps I related to the main character because my own mother was pretty cold and controlling. Ms. Roberts must have read my teenaged diary!
I've already purchased another of this author's books and will start listening first chance I get tomorrow!

Great Listen!

I have issues with narrators sounding too monotone and being boring, Julia Whelan does a great job! I felt like it was extremely easy to listen to. I listened to the book in about 5 days. I absolutely loved it.

Loved the story

Very well written ...a few laughs along the way and was not certain how it would end until the very end.

So damn good! I couldn’t stop listening.

This story had me hooked in the first couple of minutes. It kept me on my toes and so involved. I was scared, I was happy, I was shocked, I was sad. Literally every emotion you want out of a great book was packed into this one and I couldn’t get enough of it. The performance, the accents and changing of characters were spot on too. Definitely worth the read!!

Interesting story

I felt it was a bit formulaic. The Main character too unrealistic although sympathetic The villain one dimensional.
