Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

My First Nora Roberts, not my last!!

What did you love best about The Witness?

I loved the character and plot development!! It pulled you in from the start, and didn't let go until the end!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes it did. With Elizabeth being so mysterious and guarded, you never knew how a situation would turn out.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She easily performed all male and female roles. It was seamless. She is a great talent, a wonderful voice for narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I bawled like a baby. I knew something would happen, but didn't expect what did. Throughout the story it was witty, serious, it appealed to your senses.

Any additional comments?

This was my first Nora Roberts and definitely won't be my last. I wish I had read her earlier! The development and detail is what makes a great read/listen and she has it all.

Same Old Same Old

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

In the beginning this book started out very good and the story would have been great but I'm really getting tired of the sex scenes in these books. I'm not a prude but just really don't care to hear about anyone's sex life...and to tell you the truth with all these books once they hit the sex scenes they are all the same. I'm beginning to think they are all the same author under different pseudonyms. Whatever happened to leaving particular things up to one's imagination?

However, I love the story line of the book and except for the sex scene would have enjoyed the book immensely.

Would you be willing to try another book from Nora Roberts? Why or why not?

I'm not really sure at this time.

Which character – as performed by Julia Whelan – was your favorite?

Liz...Abigail

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Be careful what you wish for

Wasn't expecting a romance novel

Thought I was getting a thriller. I don't know much about romance but I think this was a romance novel wrapped around a bit of a crime novel. But that's not what I was looking for. Heroine lacks all credibility. She has an eidetic memory is an expert with all weapons and knows more about computer security them all The FBI and the Marshall service. Her lover, of course is also an ideal lawman and is Everywoman's dream.

Captivating, mysterious and romantic all at once..

Would you listen to The Witness again? Why?

I would definitely listen to this book again. The manner which Nora Roberts described both the characters and the plot allowed you, as a reader, to visualize the setting and circumstances.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

At first, I didn't think that the novel would keep my interest, until the twist in the story came along which took things in a completely different direction...loved the way the author expanded on a situation rather than detailing every aspects in sequential order.

Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first listening of Julia Whelan's, and I must say her voice variations aided in my ability to distinguish, and I'm some instances develop a disgust for the characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When being alive and living intersect...
