Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Read over and over

Nora is my go to author. Strong story, strong female lead. contemporary. Structure of the plot is formative but characters are so relatable I don't mind.

Kept me entertained the entire time. All the characters are very believable. The performance was also very good and could follow the characters really easy.

I never seem to get enough...

I have read/listened to many of Nora Roberts' books over the years, and never seem to get enough of the stories and characters she creates. The Witness is an engaging, easy listening, and sometimes humorous story. The reader is convincing as a teenager, then as an adult. I love how Julia Whelan was able to inflect different tones in her voice to portray Brooks (I can see him now), Sunny, Ash, Justin Blake and the other characters as well. Just imagine being the daughter of a control freak, witnessing a horrific crime at a young age, embracing the witness protection program as your "family", a life on the run, and then meeting people that somehow make you believe your life could actually be normal again...but the past is always looming in your thoughts and dreams and then they resurface as a reality. But can Liz/Abigail ever have a normal life again? Read the story and find out for yourself...you won't regret the time you spend in listening to this WONDERFUL story!

Smart story

Creative story with a unique main character. Enjoyed the entire story. The narration had to be sped up. She spoke too slowly!

Enjoyed this book. Idea was good!

The idea for the book was good and overall I really enjoyed it. I thought it dragged a little in the middle, but it was certainly well worth the read.

Fantastic!

I can't possibly write just how much I LOVED this book! The performance was spot on & the story took my emotions in ways I haven't read in many, many words written by Nora Roberts. I can't wait to go on my next adventure with her brilliant imagination!
