The Whisperers | [John Connolly]

The Whisperers

The border between Maine and Canada is porous. Anything can be smuggled across it: drugs, cash, weapons, people. Now a group of disenchanted former soldiers has begun its own smuggling operation, and what is being moved is infinitely stranger and more terrifying than anyone can imagine. Anyone, that is, except private detective Charlie Parker, who has his own intimate knowledge of the darkness in men's hearts.

Anyone, that is, except private detective Charlie Parker, who has his own intimate knowledge of the darkness in men's hearts.

But the soldiers' actions have attracted the attention of the reclusive Herod, a man with a taste for the strange. And where Herod goes, so too does the shadowy figure that he calls the Captain. To defeat them, Parker must form an uneasy alliance with a man he fears more than any other; the killer known as the Collector....

What did you like most about The Whisperers?

As usual, John Connolly has readers/listeners on the edge of their seats, Charlie Parker is such a believable character who leaps from the page.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Harding’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Jeff Harding is the perfect narrator for Charlie Parker, have only listened to one of the series that was not narrated by him, and I did not enjoy it as much.

"Not the best in the series !"
Would you try another book written by John Connolly or narrated by Jeff Harding?

Yes I love both the series and the narrator.

What could John Connolly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I found the story weak! And very long winded! Up to now I think the worst in the series.

How could the performance have been better?

    The performance was good.

What character would you cut from The Whisperers?

I would cut the whole story, as it doesn't add anything to the series, and would not be missed by me.

    "Hiatus"

This is my least favourite of the Charlie Parker series but that is not to say that it is a bad book. It seemed to me almost to be a book that had to be written because one was due rather than the next installment of Parker's life was ready. On the other hand it does has a fair bit to say about the treatment of US veterans returning from Iraq/Afghanistan and as such worth publishing just for that. Some old friends appear as does the seedier side of American life.

Worth a listen but I found it a little depressing, perhaps Charlie's personal circumstances got me down.

Superbly narrated by Jeff Harding as usual.

    Story
    "tedious and ridiculous"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book is more science fiction than thriller. The idea of demons in a box is too far removed from reality for this book to be believable. Also there were a lot of sections of unnecessary descriptions which seemed to lend nothing to the story.

Would you ever listen to anything by John Connolly again?

Unlikely, although I have enjoyed a previous book by this author

    Any additional comments?

The narrator (one reason I chose this title) was excellent as always, but even he didn't make this book worth listening to.
