Publisher's summary

Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was a widow with grown children. She was tired of attending her Garden Club meetings. She wanted to do something good for her country. This first in the series sends Emily on her first case after she successfully persuades a skeptical CIA recruitment officer that she is the best person for the job.

Editor's Pick

Smart, snappy, cozy series with sublime narration
"Barbara Rosenblat is one of my favorite narrators. Nowhere does she elevate a story more than with The Unexpected Mrs. Polifax. Dorothy Gilman started the series in 1970—the story of a garden-club wife from New Brunswick, NJ, who joins the CIA in a madcap series of events—and Barbara Rosenblat narrates a dozen titles, all available at Audible. If you love John D. Macdonald or Rhys Bowen, may I suggest your next audio binge?"

Literally changed my life

I first read this as a young girl. Truly it changed my life. Now in my 60’s, a former CEO, and currently a lobbyist - I love Emily. I even borrowed some of her skills in a real life scary situation when the economy was collapsing in Zimbabwe. Who would have ever anticipated THAT? She taught me that while people might underestimate a Lady based on her appearance - you can use that to your advantage. While I am not a fan ( at all) of spy novels - I thoroughly enjoy Mrs. Pollifax!

Wonderful book and series!

Mrs. Polifax is such a love. Barbara Rosenblat of course makes her so real! She's one of the BEST narrators you have.

Old, but delightful

Enjoyed the lighthearted character of this very fictional story. It’s an adventurous quick listen of a clever woman from the 1960s.

THE SECOND TIME WAS THE CHARM

Even though I knew I had listened to Mrs. Polifax before, still I turned it on and enjoyed every minute . The book is a dual treasure. One is thoroughly entertained by the plot and dialogue and also delighted by the incredible gift of Ms, Rosenblat.

Spy games.

A very funny interesting story. Love these books. I read them many years ago and am very glad I decided to listen to them. I really like the narrator ( Barbara Rosenblat).

Delightful

I wish this story had been made into a movie starring Betty White. A fun, light read that I recommend to anyone who likes spy stories and elderly ladies.

Wonderful!

Being a lady of a certain age made this book fun. I liked the balance of suspense and lighthearted wit.
