"[Weaver] is the perfect hero for such a richly nuanced tale." (Booklist)
"Superbly accomplished at both plotting and characterization....highly recommended." (Library Journal)
I love to listen to books while driving. This is one of the best I have listened to. Made me want to go out and just drive around the block to finish it!
I usually like to liten to Audible downloads at bed time. sorry to say this was a great way to fall asleep. had to find my way back the next night. Slow paced and very little depth to bad people. Ending did not make sense. Milo turned out to be a loser and Simmons the heroine.
LeCarre taught us something about what was really happening in the world and his characters seemed genuine. Graham Green taught us some truth about the world's real villains and his characters had true depth. This writer gives us none of these things. It's just an action book with no character depth or anything to help us feel empathy. If this is the future of espionage novels, it's time to move on.
I found this to be a dull, unrealistic spy novel. The characters were cardboard and unappealing. I gave up listening after an hour or two. Perhaps the novel improves, but I did not wan to waste my time to f;ind out.
It dragged at the beginning and I figured it would pick up .. but it didn't. Visits too many scenarious and sub-plots without going anywhere. Rambles without a real focus .. never did figure the point of the story.
The writer builds your expectations just to leave you with the feeling that relationships are at best cumbersome, at worst, deadly. No real resolution, not entertainment, just several hours of waiting for something important to occur.
This is an interesting plot with surprises. It's all I expect from a thriller and the only reason I docked a star is because I listen to a lot of thrillers and they start to run together for me. But, this is definitely one that I really enjoyed.
this was one of the best books i've heard in awhile. certainly lives up to its excellent press reviews. the author deals with a complex interplay of myriad espionage and counter espionage agencies that are active around the globe and personal motivations that inevitably affect how these programs are carried out. i was interested from the beginning and couldn't stop listening. the book did require some careful listening, but i thought the narrator was excellent at differentiating the characters and keeping the story flowing. this is more a thriller of motivation and interaction than shoot 'em up, but there's plenty of action, too.
I love books!
I suppose most of us that listen to audio books are on the lookout for new authors that we might enjoy. There are so many here in audible.com. Often you don't read a book because of bad reviews others write when you're really not sure if it would be good or bad. I'd never heard of Steinhauer and read somewhere here in audible.com, maybe the home page, where Nelson DeMille, another author I think, said this was a really good book. Well, I read it and I agree it is a really good book. Interesting character development, interesting twists and turns, you find yourself likeing some of the different characters. Just before typing this review I saw Steinhauer has other books here in audible. I'll have to check them out.
