L.A. police detective Shane Scully comes under investigation by Internal Affairs (derisively known as "the tin collectors") after he kills his ex-partner who was one of the mayor's bodyguards. Temporarily reassigned, so that he can remain under the department's watchful eye, Scully finds that more than his badge is at stake when he is set up to take the rap in a deadly plot of corruption and conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of the LAPD.

Superbly fabulousQ

What made the experience of listening to The Tin Collectors the most enjoyable?

I was in the book with the characters. I enjoyed learning the details of the standards internal affairs and the police bill of rights holds their officers. I've read (heard) over 750 audible books in the last 5 years and this is in the top one or two. A thoroughly enjoyable read from start to the last sentence.

What did you like best about this story?

I appreciated how Mr. Cannell led us through each step of the ending rather than climaxing the drama with "the end" as so many mystery and thrill authors do. An ending to a 10 hour book needs to be longer than three minutes. The author allowed a reasonable de-escalation and a chance to decompress and savor the loose ends being neatly tied.

What about Robert Lawrence’s performance did you like?

Mr. Lawrence's performance painted a mental picture of the attitude, demeanor, and character of each person. A narrator should not detract from the narrative and Mr. Lawrence was a great addition.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's not over until you're out of bullets.

Shane Scully Fan !!!

Stephen J Cannell really hit it out of the park with this first in the Shane Scully series! Shane is a Los Angeles police Department sergeant who gets in seemingly over his head but manages to land on his feet. Very well written and believable plus nonstop excitement. Highly recommended

underwhelmed

I had wanted to listen to this one for several years when it was referenced in a Michael Connelly book - I enjoy detective series especially the ones that are somewhat realistic - unfortunately this was not one of them. In the end, I wasn't sure if the book was written in a way that narrating would be cheesy, or if the Narration was simply below average. The storyline in this one is both implausible and to a large degree uninteresting. I think this is the first book in the series, and later books have Scott Brick as the narrator so I may try another one of the series.

How many stereotypes can you put in one book?

Apparently the answer is a LOT. Both predictable and boring is not a good combination for a cop story - - and this is both. I am reminded of why it takes a really superior writer to make a conspiracy plausible. Unfortunately, this book is short one superior writer. I also kept looking at the narration - - the voice is so deep it sounds like you must be listening to the wrong speed. Can't recommend this one.

Great story, bad narrator

This was a great story but the narrator needs to get some better voices. As the main character he was great. When he voiced others he sounded goofy. He made the other characters sound cliche.
