I can not recommend this enough. My only complaint was that it finished. I eagerly await anything more from this talented Author.
The gothic beauty, the mystery and the prose is all perfectly aligned to bring you hours of delight. You won't be able to turn this one off.
Beautifully written, Diane Setterfield takes you on a great journey to another world. I was enveloped by the characters and their stories. Loved it!
A real "page turner". I loved this book. It's full of loyalty, love, twists and turns - I could almost touch the characters and Jenny Agutter is an excellent narrator.
I have just finished this story and found an old fashioned sense of satisfaction in the ending that had the pieces tied and completed. It weaves beautifully in and out of the characters stories and time past and present. It never left me confused about who was who but always moved forward like a sturdy craft on the water sure of its destination. A fantastic read as I sat, drove, rode and walked.
As soon as I finished this book, I wanted to go back to the beginning and start all over again. There are so many intriguing aspects to the story and the author has been skillful enough not to leave any of the threads dangling unintentionally. A very satisfying read and highly recommended!
Verbally intoxicating. By turns, chilling and mesmerising -thank you Ms Setterfield.
Hats off to Jenny Agutter for her excellent narration. Skilled, accessible and honest narration is that vital link between author and reader.
Up there with Water for Elephants & The Time Travellers Wife. Compelling, I loved it and this is one of the few books I will listen to again.
"Atmospheric and gripping"
I couldn't stop listening to this wonderfully atmospheric story. The pleasure greatly enhanced by Jenny Agutter's accomplished narration. It's difficult to pigeon-hole the book: it delves into psychology and the paranormal; into a quest for the truth about identity and echos some of the themes in Jane Eyre. It's one of those books that sucks you into it's world and leaves you wishing it hadn't ended.
"A Fabulous Twisting Tale"
I first came across this book in paperback form and although it was a bit of an epic novel I waded my way through hooked by its secrets and saga. I really wanted to experience the story a second time but just didn't have huge chunks of time to sit down and read it so I purchased the audio version and it is as wonderful as I remember it!
The book takes place over two time periods and I must admit it is the older era which I find the most enrapturing and interesting. By the end of the audiobook the twists and turns will have you on the edge of your seat and you will want to listen to the whole thing again in order to consume every little detail.
"A great reader but a dodgy plot."
Although the author spins a good yarn, this book left me feeling dissatisfied.
We do not know what year it is and the themes of the story are unmistakenly gothic. It has an engrossing atmosphere but the convoluted plot left me wondering if I'd got it right by the time I reached the end.
The main strength of this audiobook is the excellent narration by Jenny Aguter. This is what kept me listening.
"Gets better each time"
This is the second time I have listened to The Thirteenth tale partly because the story is so cleverly entangled that I wanted to make sure I did not miss a single bit .
I was not disappointed!! A beautiful story, with characters you feel like you understand and encage with.
I have been longing for a book which drew me in and in which I could loose myself. This story has it all, it is a psychological thriller, a love story and a who done it all in one! You will not be disappointed.
"A captivating story, Beautifully read"
This story kept me interested the whole way through, as the reader tries to solve the puzzles and guess the answers more questions arise but they are all answered in time. It is beautifully and sensitively read with such a soothing voice.
This book was recommended and didn't disappoint. It has all the prerequisites of a gothic novel, old crumbling house, peculiar characters and ghosts in the wainscot. Loved it, loved the narration and loved the detailed ending..
"gripping thriller with hidden depths"
all the different charactors and the pace of the book
the unfurling mystery and secret at the end
all the charactors, the pace, the theatrical pauses, all of it
would have loved to but not possible
I wanted to read this after watching the drama on tv. it was even better than the drama (no surprise there really).
superb writing and superb narration
"Absolutely loved it."
It made my Christmas to have such an engrossing story to get lost in during the long dark nights. I absolutely loved it.
"I liked this more than the book ??"
Yes. Jenny Aguitter really brought the characters to life
The book thief. A story unfolding with each chapter
