Publisher's summary

Detective Tess McCrae investigates a grisly crime scene in the ghost town of Credo, Arizona. The evidence suggests a cartel drug hit. But Tess, with a nearly faultless photographic memory, sees what others might miss: This is no drug killing. Someone went to gruesome lengths to cover their tracks.

The killer’s trail leads from Tucson to California - from anti-government squatters to the heights of wealthy society. As Tess follows the trail of gore and betrayal, perfect and indelible in her memory, she uncovers far more than one man’s murder and solves much more than one isolated crime.

The Survivors Club is a serpentine, stay-up-all-night thriller from New York Times best-selling author and master storyteller J. Carson Black.

Critic reviews

"An utterly engrossing thriller. The Survivors Club grips us from the very start and simply doesn’t let go. The novel seamlessly achieves that rarity in crime fiction: making our palms sweat while bringing the characters and their stories straight into our hearts. Bravo!" (Jeffery Deaver, New York Times best-selling author)

Liked it; but...

This turned out to be a good mystery, well written and well plotted, didn't identify the killer or killers too quickly. It was also not what I thought I was getting. there are only limited references to the perfect memory of deputy Tess McCrae. I suppose that's better than the author centering the book on her memory; still a few more memory references would be a nice touch in the next work in the series. It's still worth the credit; a solid 3.8 rating.

Survivor's club barely surviving

This book was "OK". I can't say much more than that. The plot and characters were a bit hard to follow which is not good for an audible book.

Lacking

Found the writing choppy and disconnected, in need of a strong editor. Never really identified with the characters and while the book centers around the female detective’s memory, in the end, that does not seem to play a significant role in the outcome. Narration was ok. Ending kind of just fizzles out. Not worth a credit.

What happeneed?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This was my first J Carson Black novel. The story was good but ended like there was a missed deadline. All of a sudden with three short chapters it was over. Disappointed..

Would you ever listen to anything by J. Carson Black again?

Not worth th money.

Have you listened to any of Joyce Bean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely not.

Good for a long drive

I've heard other books by this reader. She takes a little getting used to for me. The story was engaging, but it ended up having so many characters that I sort of lost my place with them. It was still easy to follow the general story, and it was good for a long boring drive. Kept me awake.

Not worth my time.

What did you like best about The Survivors Club? What did you like least?

Adele, the dog.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was interesting to listen to the skydiving episode. The interactions between Michael and Martin left you with a skewed view of a gay relationship.

What three words best describe Joyce Bean’s voice?

Pleasant but her voice rarely changed, so distinguishing which character was talking was difficult.

Was The Survivors Club worth the listening time?

no.

OK but a weird ending

This book was just OK. The language was a little stilted and the end didn't really come together for me - the ending needed more development. The main character, Tess, was quite believable and the concept was good. However, it was as if the first and second halves of the book were written by different people or the second half was just written in a hurry. The first half developed well and held my interest but it went downhill from there. It lost my interest about 2/3 through and I only continued listening out of curiosity.

Not your common receipe murder

Where does The Survivors Club rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was very good among the murder mysteries genre. Most are predictable reasons for murder and the suspects obvious, not so here.

What other book might you compare The Survivors Club to and why?

I can't think of another.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Her different voices are not different enough.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. A 5 star book is one I want to listen to again. Later on I might listen to this again.

Narration performance is terrible.

What disappointed you about The Survivors Club?

The book, the story line would be reasonably good if the narration was not so distracting. I have to keep hitting replay in order to connect the story line because the narrator tries to use different voices for the characters. I can appreciate this method from an experienced narrator or one that is good, but I'm sorry for this book it is very distracting,

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I have not completed the book and I do not know if I will.

Would you be willing to try another one of Joyce Bean’s performances?

Not at this point.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration.
