Publisher's summary

Nate Overbay, a former soldier suffering from PTSD and ALS, goes to an 11th-floor bank and climbs out the bathroom window onto the ledge, ready to end it all. But as he’s steeling himself to jump, a crew of gunmen bursts into the bank and begins viciously shooting employees and customers. With nothing to lose, Nate climbs back inside, confronts the robbers, and with his military training, starts taking them out, one by one. The last man standing leaves Nate with a cryptic warning: “He will make you pay in ways you can’t imagine.” Soon enough, Nate learns what this means.

He is kidnapped by Pavlo, a savage Ukrainian mobster and mastermind of the failed heist. Now blocked from getting into the bank vault to retrieve the critical item inside, Pavlo gives Nate a horrifying ultimatum: Either break in and acquire the item or watch Pavlo slowly kill the people Nate loves most - his estranged wife, Janie, and his teenaged daughter, Cielle. Nate lost them both when he came back from Iraq broken and confused. Now he’s got one chance to protect the people he loves, even if it’s the last thing he is able to do.

See My Review here

Action packed action novel with a very human main character who has very human problems...somewhat overdone at times. There were several subplots and twists as the novel went on; it could have quit at many points. The characters are pretty believable, except for a few errors. I liked the book and it listened well.

Scott is solid as a brick!

Story captivating, if a bit contrived. Suspend doubt & enjoy the audiobook. Mr. Brick, as always, does an enjoyable telling.

Finally...a ‘normal’ protagonist!!

Don’t get me wrong...I love an ex Navy SEAL as hero story as much as the next guy. This story, with a good ole regular Army ground-pounder as hero, was a nice change! The story was very “humanized” as Nate battled ALS and the family dynamic was a nice touch!

As for Scott Brick...he could read a cook book and make it sound exciting!

Spectacular

Even if you suspected how it was going to end, it was such a hugh build-up of emotion. The love and care and devotion a man will go through for his family is heartwarming.. . .A special note since my review is written in 2022 and the the book was published in 2012. People should take note on how to pronounce KIEV!

Stunning

After 4 books of numbing violence and endless terror I finally learned why Gregg’s writing is acclaimed. Orphan X’s dulling, plodding violence and Don’t Look Back’s blood chilling terror let me wondering what I wasn’t getting. But The Survivor’s gripping emotion and beautifully rendered study of parenthood erases all skepticism. I’m a committed fan.
