"The Sixth Soul - I loved it!"
I'm not a huge fan of crime novels, but from the very start this one had me gripped. This is an intellegent, tight and well crafted novel where none of the elements are ever overplayed. For example, there's a welcome absence of the frantic plot twists that others rely too much on. Mark Roberts clearly knows how to tell a great story and does so here with aplomb. Joe Jameson also does a fine job with the narration.
This was an ok listen but overall I found the plot very predictable and some of the writing quite forced/unnatural. Additionally, I found the narrator a little annoying if I'm honest. The voices of the various characters, both male and female, ended up sounding like comedy caricatures. Not the worst listen but light years away from the best in my opinion.
"Great First Novel"
As soon as I finished this I went to look for others in the series, only to find with surprise that this was the first. I've read all John Connolly's Charlie Parker series, so if like me you enjoyed those you'll enjoy this. Not quite as dark and graphic, but still with a strong spiritual element - with undertones of satanism. I really bought into the main characters and was calling out loud at the book towards the end. The reader was good, although not convinced by the female character voices - I sometimes wish produces of audio books would employ a female voice for dialogue, it didn't spoil the story as I eventually got used to it and was able to suspend my disbelief - now when is the next one out I can't wait!!!
This was a good, exciting listen. It made few demands and was ideal entertainment for when I was doing the decorating. Reminded me of a tv police drama and would probably work well as such. The characters developed well and are sympathetic enough to stand further outings in future books.
The narration was excellent.
"Took a bit to warm up but good till the end"
You need to give this a bit of time to warm up but it is worth it. A good pace and development and a satisfying end. The story develops nicely through the background of one detective, and some rather dodgy members of the church.
"This should be a movie!"
Joe Jameson is a great narrator and has done justice to this perfectly scripted book. Well done Mark Roberts and Joe Jameson. Looking forward to more from the author. And of course, more from Mr Joe Jameson.
"Average story with odd narration"
Perhaps just me but I really didn't like a lot of this book. I particularly didn't like the narration. The narrator attempts to do a number of voices but most of the men have the same booming or gruff voice and most of the women sound like they are whining.
My dislike of the narrator may have tainted my view of the book. However, I did find it really predictable. Despite this the book does build to an exciting finish.
I wouldn't buy another book by the author or one read by the narrator but others clearly liked it so judge for yourself.
"Dark, twisted and intriguing!"
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a dark and twisted tale involving a serial killer who sacrifices the souls of unborn children. Overall, character and plot development was very good and leaves you caring about what happens to the pivotal characters.
If anything let it down at all, it was the slightly unconvincing narration by Joe Jameson. It's ok, it's not the worst, it's just not the best, mainly due to the forced voice that he gives to many of the characters. However, if you enjoy crime fiction, then you should enjoy this book!
DI David Rosen is in charge of tracking down a serial killer who is targeting pregnant women, Difficulties at work from his senior officer, a reasonable home life, with some problems. Good narration
