Critic reviews

“Fast-and-furious.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“The pace is relentless.... The plot ... [is] complex without becoming overheated.” (San Antonio Express-News)

“Though there’s plenty of twisty plot, it’s Nesbø’s writing—textured, humane, evocative, moody, cinematic—that keeps this thing rolling forward like a toboggan on a steep slope.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Another slam dunk by Nesbo

I thoroughly enjoy the journey through the multilayered mystery with every revelation of the human condition that goes with it.

Another great book by Nesbo.

Not quite as good as The Redbreast and The Devil's Star but well worth the time and money. Doesn't keep you as on the edge as those two. But comes close! The narrator isn't up to Robin Sachs caliber but he doesn't do harm to the listening of the book. This is another great book by Jo Nesbo. He really is something special

Original plot twists

Great story, nicely paced with delicious details. The characters are fully developed with human failings and flawed heroism. Highly worth the read.

The Best Yet

I think this might be the best in the series so far. The antagonist was relatable and there were plenty of plot twists. You feel for more of the secondary characters than in previous books. At this point, I'm not sure you can stop listening to the series. I liked John Lee's reading I thought he did a fine job, the tribute at the beginning was nice.

Complicated story. Worth it.

As with the author's other books, I had to really pay attention to the unfolding story. The author created complex characters using descriptive and narrative nuances. The most complex of them all is the main character. The narrator did a great job of personifying Harry Hole with all his quirks and flaws. The author created different personalities for each character. The scenes were described in such a way that I was pulled into the story. The plot was intriguing. For the most part, people acted as people do.

Love Harry Hole.

Love these Jo Nesbeth stories but they aren’t for the easy reader. The narration is first rate. There are a lot of moving pieces which Hole manages to put into place. Worth your time.

Redeemed my faith in Harry Hole

As others have pointed out, this is not the last in the series. Since I had not liked the last one -- Phantom -- I was happy to have my faith in Nesbo restored with this earlier installment. Once again, we are following Hole's ingenious (but perfectly sensible) thought process as he unravels the mystery: A man is murdered and, as Harry tracks the killer, the killer appears to be tracking a new victim -- or is he? As usual in Nesbo novels, the clues are often psychological. The root of the evil is in the past. There is no black and white. And the pieces come together nicely. Hole solves the puzzle of course, but not without some suffering of his own in the process. Part of the lure of this series is the vulnerability of the main character, so we are not surprised.

Im addicted to this series

Don't buy any of this series unless you plan to listen to them all. I would suggest you listen in order which is now possible because most have been translated at this point. Although there have been two different narrators, you really won't notice unless you listen to one after the other. They are both excellent. Start with the Bat, (which was actually my least favorite but still good) and work your way through the series. The main character, Harry Hole, is not you typical detective due to his alcohol problems, but he always manages to solve the case. The author does a great job of giving you the clues to solve it before Harry picks up the trail. You almost want to shake the book and say, "Harry , look the clue is right in front of you."

I would rate this series on par with Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. But this one has more books so you can listen longer.

The best Harry, yet!

This series has finally started to grow on me. 'The Redeemer' is easily my favorite up to this point. John Lee is outstanding.

These books can stand alone; however, I recommend that you experience them from the beginning of the series. There are elements of Harry's life, and cases, that appear in several books before they are fully resolved.

If dark detective fiction is your thing, and you don't expect your heroes to be squeaky-clean, then Jo Nesbo just may be your new favorite.
