One freezing night in Oslo Christmas shoppers gather to listen to a Salvation Army street concert. An explosion cuts through the music, and a man in uniform falls to the ground, shot in the head at point-blank range.
Harry Hole and his team have little to work with: no immediate suspect, no weapon and no motive. But when the assassin discovers he has shot the wrong man, Harry Hole’s troubles have only just begun. After some exceptionally shrewd detective work, the team begins to close in on a suspected hit man, monitoring his credit card, false passport and the line to his employer. With no money, only six bullets and no place to stay in the bitter cold, the hit man becomes increasingly desperate. He will stop at nothing to eliminate his target. Moving at a breathless pace, The Redeemer is Jo Nesbo’s most gripping thriller yet.

I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!
This was my third Nesbo novel and, on balance, I enjoyed it the most. The "Prince" was never quite believable to me but the action was the strength of these first reads. Redeemer is equally action packed and gets 4 stars because of a writing technique that is clever but tittitating. Chapters begin with a seeming continuation of the prior chapter only to be jolted later by discovering that Nesbo has changed character on the reader without the use of a proper noun or other identifying trait to signal the switch.
Corruption is everywhere in this book. We find corruption in the business world and the police department, which is usual, but now we find it in the Salvation Army!!! The ending expands the circle of corruption to an icon of respectability in Nesbo's world. And the shadow of corruption now appears on Harry's path. Did Harry do the right thing?
I'm obviously behind the times, but have just discovered Jo Nesbo. Beautifully written, really well plotted and excellent character development. It's Norwegian setting and general tone make comparison with Steig Larson inevitable - not as original a series as the Millennium trilogy, but overall perhaps a better edited one ?
Sean Barrett' narration is superb. The delivery of different characters is subtle and consistent throughout the recording.
No negatives really - buy it.
This book continually gathers pace as you read it., it is engrossing. Harry, the lead detective, has his own personal problems and gets you onside in no time. This is the second book I have read By Jo Nesbo and I have enjoyed both of them.
Australian, living in beautiful central Victoria. Audio book addict otherwise fairly well balanced.
I didn't think I could find anything as satisfying as a Kurt Wallender (Henning Menkell) novel but praise the Lord and pass the ammunition, here is Jo Nesbo with his main man, Harry Hole. What is it about Scandinavian crime - it reigns supreme. The best thing about The Redeemer is the plot twists and turns without becoming convoluted. The characters are interesting, believable and multil layered, even the minor ones. Even when you know who's done what and why, you still don't know how it will end. Nesbo is such a skilfull writer, I'm thrilled to have finally discovered him.
Another great story
Great timing and intonation
A classic Nesbo/Hole story with more twists and turns than a tin of spaghetti.
Eclectic mixer of books of my youth and ones I always meant to read, but didn't.
By the time one reaches the tipping point in a series, they might be expecting the standard and pace to level out. This is certainly not the case for Nesbo's Harry Hole series. This title is a marked development (for the better) on the previous title, "The Devil's Star"; not that it was poor - it was the best in the series to that point. It is also a world apart from the more recently released "The Cockroaches", which was in fact Book 2, and the book that I last read. In other words, Nesbo's plots are getting more complex, the characters are getting deeper (as they should after 5 books) and suspense is the winner. I normally rate myself on being able to pick the plot twist in this genre, and, although I picked the principal plot line, the sub-plot was a surprise to me.
Again, Sean Barrett does a bang-up job as Harry; again, I am looking forward to the next installment (especially with the high praise that has been bestowed upon it).
This title is well worth the read, but it probably is improved if you have read Books 3, 4 and 5 first. It can stand alone, but it is much better with the back-story intact.
Yes, very in suspense!
yes, interesting plot
yes, very good!
no, but kept me on the edge!
I will be interested to listen to the other sequences!
Wife, mother, nanna, part time actor, avid reader, world traveller, golfer, bridge player, lover of life.
Yes. Sean Barrett delivers a terrific performance of all the characters, even the female ones. I could listen to him any time.
He has a great delivery and even performs the females well. I like the quality in his voice.
Harry Hole books don't really move you.
complexity of story, development of characters further. surprises along the way and warm human dimension. story telling of the highest order.
wonderful Norwegian accents, love it when he gives Harry an accented English voice. pace, perfect.
yes, but pleasurable to stretch it out - don't want it to end too soon.
Yes, Sean Barrett gives an excellent eprformance and the story keeps you going until the end.
Sean Barrett gives an excellent performance. The Harry's character is one to sink your teeth into. YOu have to go back to find out more about his psyche.
I can't remember any specific scence but I love the humanity of it all. The Redeemer story is as imprtant as anyones and I guess that is the point. You should always see the person, history to understand the behaviour.
I listen to Nesbo books while I walk, run, cylcle, drive or paint an excellent companion
After listening to the millenium series lost for what next to fill the hole - this and the snowman are equal in my eyes. Simpler storyline and easier to follow but not to the books discredit. Unable to stop and think Lisbeth Salander should work with Harry! Redeemer first if in doubt. Brilliant - more please!
This was my first Jo Nesbo but it won't be my last. Yes it was slow to start with, and the parallel plot lines with characters carry out the same actions with hardly a pause in the narration during the early stages of the book was somewhat confusing until I discovered what was going on. But once I was into the story it was a fascinating plot, with numerous twists turns and surprises. Rather akin tot he old fashioned 'who dunnit' I think that all the clues are in you story for the reader/listener to work out who did what and to whom! Needless to say I didn't manage to piece together all the clues, Very well narrated with excellent characterisation I thoroughly recommend this book.
Interestingly my wife read the book whilst I listened to it, and I have to admit that it was useful to have the printed version to hand for reference, although perhaps Audible would not wish to hear that! Still it led to some interesting meal time conversations between us over the plot lines.
This is the second Jo Nesbo book I have listened to (I started with the Snowman). I really like his style of writing, the storyline is compelling and clever. Harry Hole is an entertaining character, intense, flawed and laugh out loud funny at times too, with the narration by Sean Barrett really bringing him to life.
I can't get enough of Nesbo at the moment, please stock his other titles too if they are available, I am sure they will fly off of your virtual shelves...
"Nordic Noir at its best"
I've just finished this title and can't recommend it enough. This is the first Nesbo book I've listened to, after previously enjoying the Millenium Trilogy. Narration is excellent, and suits the gritty and dark themes of the books and characters. The story has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, even if you work out some of it before the final chapters there's many layers to this book.
One thing to note - it's about mid-way through Nesbo's Harry Hole series, so I wouldn't necessarily advise starting with this title. I'm going to order the earliest available ones in the series and take it from there!
The story is gripping from the begining and is well read from the narrator. Not once over the 18 hours of listening did my attention slip and i've become a big fan of Harry Hole and Jo Nesbo. If you're looking for a twisting, gripping and thrilling listen then dont overlook this gem.
This is by far the best book so far, complex, informative and gripping.. more please
"Not his best."
This started out really well and I was enjoying it a lot, but then the momentum was lost and I am not sure if I will get around to finishing it at all. Good narrator but a little too slow paced for me.
"Not an Easy Listen"
I just didn't enjoy this book. It wasn't easy to follow, it wasn't because it was a complicated book but I just found it quite boring which I didn't feel was the narrators fault but the story in general. I nearly gave up on it several times and I would have done if I had been reading it. I just didn't feel it was cripping enough and with the story being based around the salvation army it wasn't for me. There are so many other books out there which are better. It was a shame because I was really looking forward to a Jo Nesbo book.
"The Harry Hole Joe Nesbo series"
I so like Harry as a character an ex drunk getting over a failed marriage but although he's cleave with his insight he's not rewarded by his peers who see him as a threat or as a drunk.
Bearing with the author is difficult at times he keeps forgetting how to open sequences by not knowing who is talking with who for a while and chapters make no sense, flipping from one line in the story to another within a chapter and there are 175 chapters. Needs to learn so lessons from customer feedback.
This time harry is tracking a hit man but who he works for and why is the story's plot.
"Excellent once again from Nesbo"
Another great installment to the Harry Hole series, great story that keeps you engaged from start to finish!
