FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES

An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!

Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

good story with an interesting twist

Connelly tells a good story and I've always liked his characters. I think this one could have used a bit more editing--it gets a little long-winded in places. I liked the reader--good emotion and very clear voices that seemed natural for the characters.

Great book

I'm a big fan of Connelly, I like the way the books build up and keep you locked in until the end.

Boy am I glad I discovered this book

What made the experience of listening to The Poet the most enjoyable?

The narration is outstanding. For a guy with such a deep voice, he sure flexes it without sounding silly. I thoroughly enjoyed this narration. 5/5.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

For the most part, the plot kept me on edge. I did struggle initially to get into it and had to replay the first two chapters a few times so that I could pay my undivided attention to it.

What about Buck Schirner’s performance did you like?

Everything. This guy is super-talented. I don't really want to search for other titles as he is Jack Mack (sic) to me. Maybe after I listen to a few others first could I go back to listening to some more Buck Schirner.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really. I smiled a few times at the banter.

Any additional comments?

I am so glad I discovered this book after The Scarecrow had been released. I empathize with those who have unfortunately had to wait a good few years (decade, I think) for a sequel.I don't know how I would have handled it. I'm currently listening to The Scarecrow. I played it immediately after The Poet ended.

Solid mystery/crime novel from a different vantage

This is the third Connelly novel I've listened to and I've enjoyed all three. I picked this up because of the great reviews it got. It's supposed to be one of his best. It's really good, but I didn't like it anywhere near as much as the Lincoln Lawyer.

Seeing the plot unfold through the eyes of a journalist instead of a police detective was an interesting take. The narration was good and overall I enjoyed the book. I found myself looking for excuses to listen to it.

Slow start, but amazing finish

Michael Connelly is the best. I have been reading the Bosch series, and after 6 books decided to read all of his books in the order he published them. This book starts slow, but the twists and excitement in the second half are totally worth it. 3 star on performance because of the slow start

READ THIS BOOK BEFORE THE NARROWS

This book is great, total page turner, but I already knew the ending because I’ve the Harry Bosch book The Narrows. It completely spoiled what would have been a knockout punch of a twist. At least if you’ve read the Narrows then you can have more of an understanding of how a certain character plotted throughout.

The narrator was good, not irritating. Did have to speed up the playback because there are so many pregnant pauses where there shouldn’t be. And the word pedophile is consistently pronounced ‘peydophile” or ‘peedophile’ like pee in a cup.
