FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES

An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!

Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Many Twists and Turns

At the beginning of the book, I thought that this was going to be a boring. But I have seldom found Michael Connelly’s books anything but riveting. This book quickly evolved in a fascinating and intriguing story that I could not turn off!

The world has changed so much since 1996.

You don't realize it until you catch an old episode of Law and Order, when they were still using pay phones and beepers, or read this novel. The plot is good, the intensity is there, and I didn't see the ending until it hit me between the eyes. Living through the computer revolution, I can see how the evolution of technology affected both police and criminals; sometimes the police were ahead, sometimes it was the criminals. Reading about the "old" ways of doing things doesn't really ruin the story, but it shaves a bit of the sharpness off the "cutting edginess". If you can overlook this aspect, then you'll enjoy this. I personally found it distracting.

Gripping plot with a few perfect twist for the ending.

Put this one on your “want list”. It will keep you switching “who done it” all the way to the very end.
You won’t be disappointed. Thank you Michael Connelly for the riveting entertainment on these cold dreary days. Buck Schirner, what can I say? You sure can tell a story.
A comfy chair, a fire in the fireplace, ridgebacks laying around and a gripping book. Perfection!
