Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Nelson DeMille returns with another heart-pounding John Corey thriller—this time including Corey’s FBI agent wife Kate Mayfield...and their mission is to catch an elusive terrorist mastermind before he catches them.

Anti-terrorist Task Force agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, have been posted overseas to Sana'a, Yemen—one of the most dangerous places in the Middle East. While there, they will be working with a small team to track down one of the masterminds behind the USS Cole bombing: A high-ranking Al Qaeda operative known as The Panther. Ruthless and elusive, he's wanted for multiple terrorist acts and murders—and the US Government is determined to bring him down, no matter the cost. As latecomers to a deadly game, John and Kate don't know the rules, the players, or the score. What they do know is that there is more to their assignment than meets the eye—and that the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Filled with breathtaking plot turns and told in John Corey's inimitable voice, The Panther is a brilliant depiction of one of the most treacherous countries in the world and raises disturbing questions about whether we can ever know who our enemies—or our allies—really are.

John Cory always delivers

I have only one criticism of this book. It becomes bedraggled in wordiness at times which causes the story to drag. Aside from that a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Good listening but predictable

I greatly enjoyed most of this book, but I believe the plot was predictable mostly. It also moved a bit slowly for my taste. Having picked at it, I want to say I’m glad I made the purchase. DeMille is a great author and I loved the sense of humor throughout. The reader did a fabulous job and I think inflection was perfect for this novel. Thank you Audible for offering this!

This would make a good movie

I have read many, if not all of his books, and the stories are good, but the distractions are many. John Corey is a good character, but I tire of the endless smart ass comments. Anything used to much becomes a unneeded distraction and there are parts of the story that just go on way too long because of the unnecessary Corey comments. I get it, move on.

What is good about this story is the involvement of the Cole bombing, which very few of us were told about the whole story and implications and the link to A guys. This is where a good movie script would help tell a better story. Most of all it would be great to see how Kate would be portrayed in a movie. John Bremmer is John Travolta, but who would be John Corey. It’s time to make these books into movies.

Long Cat Tale

DeMille is able to create a world you have never been to before, introduce you to it and it's people and cause you to love it! Not This Time. This cat was too big. Cut a wee bit of it off in Part I. Take away lots of blubber.. opps... blather in Part II and now you are to the end of the tale. Every cat knows it must have a nice wave goodby. Here you barely get a bob. The Lion books were absolutely fantastic. I was hoping for another 'I cant wait to get back to hear if ______, but not this time and I was very dissappointed. In The Lion books John's smart mouth was most enjoyable and his barbs well placed. In The Panther I felt that was mainly all I got and nothing of the other characters. Scott, big fan of your work! Here, you did not have much to work with. Readers, dont give up on Mr. DeMille but do get the abridged verison of this one .PS: Normally. I would not say buy abridged!

Finally John Corey is back

I am afraid Mr. DeMille is bored and finished with John Corey, this book is not up to the standard of the other series books and I waited so long for it. Scott Brick brings Corey to life as usual, I can't imagine anyone else reading these books. There was not as much wisecracking and very few jokes, which I missed. A good book because I really like the characters and the narration, but not a great book as usual.

Not as good as he other John Cory books

The first 2/3 of the book were a bit slow and tried to be a bit too funny or cute which got tiresome. The last third was better. But on the whole the book was not as good as the others.

Corey and Mayfield are Back!

It feels so long since the last Corey/Mayfield book, it's great to have them back! The story is classic DeMille. The plot creative yet believable, full of the twists and turns we love. All the old characters are back, together with some new ones. I thought it amazing how DeMille dusts off his hero from "The General's Daughter," brings his life up to date and drops him onto the Yemen front-lines. As always, Scott Brick does a fantastic job bringing each character to life. Overall, Great story, Great plot, Great characters, Wonderfully read. Highly recommend!

Another fine Corey

John Corey is on the case again, this time to track down a wayward jihadi leader who is an American citizen from New Jersey. The leader, known as the Panther, was one of the planners of the attack on the USS Cole, and is Yemeni by origin. The majority of the action happens in Yemen. The storyline is classic Corey (and DeMille), which is, of course, a Very Good Thing. Corey is his usual irreverent, wise-cracking self, and his wife Kate the reasoned foil. The action is fast, the bedouin context interesting, and the potential for inside enemies a bit nail-biting. I highly recommend this latest installment, and hope for more. Scott Brick is, as usual, just right for John Corey.

Good listen, but not his best.

Where does The Panther rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks about average with other action boos I have listened too.

What other book might you compare The Panther to and why?

Similiar to the Lion.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

John Cory, but at times I found him to have a smart a#@ remark every time he opened his mouth. Sometimes I felt he could just talk without having a wise crack. Got old after awhile

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

Overall I enjoyed the book. At times it did seem to drag a little compared to some of his other books. Especially enjoyed the last quarter of the book.
