Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Nelson DeMille returns with another heart-pounding John Corey thriller—this time including Corey’s FBI agent wife Kate Mayfield...and their mission is to catch an elusive terrorist mastermind before he catches them.

Anti-terrorist Task Force agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, have been posted overseas to Sana'a, Yemen—one of the most dangerous places in the Middle East. While there, they will be working with a small team to track down one of the masterminds behind the USS Cole bombing: A high-ranking Al Qaeda operative known as The Panther. Ruthless and elusive, he's wanted for multiple terrorist acts and murders—and the US Government is determined to bring him down, no matter the cost. As latecomers to a deadly game, John and Kate don't know the rules, the players, or the score. What they do know is that there is more to their assignment than meets the eye—and that the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Filled with breathtaking plot turns and told in John Corey's inimitable voice, The Panther is a brilliant depiction of one of the most treacherous countries in the world and raises disturbing questions about whether we can ever know who our enemies—or our allies—really are.

Loved this story line and narrator!

I listened to this production by Audible while doing housework and when I go for a long walks. Scott Brick's narration is as great as the book itself. Scott brings the story to life and takes you to Yemen and life there
for a few hours!

Over the top

It is hard to believe that people would tolerate the level of snottiness of John Corey. I enjoy smarminess, but this was a bit extreme.

It's a great story

What did you love best about The Panther?

It had a timely story line concerning Yemen and drones.

What other book might you compare The Panther to and why?

Two other books by Nelson DeMille were also very good, Charm School and Word of Honor.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

My least favorite character was the main character, a wise guy that spoiled the book by trying to be funny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would like to have listened to the book all in one sitting, but my MP3 player needs to be recharged frequently. I liked it well enough to listen to it twice so far.

Any additional comments?

I usually like Scott Brick, but his rendition of the main character spoiled it for me, especially his way of saying, "Right" constantly.

great read, but a bit below Mr. DeMille potential

What did you love best about The Panther?

Thoroughly researched, abounds with cultural and local details about Yemen and Arabia. Interesting plot, yet slightly below fully developed and intricately weaved plots of "the lion's game" or "night fall".
The internal dialog going on in John Cory's head with his conversationalists is funny, witty and the fact that we are sometimes unsure if he actually uttered this or that line or just thought it makes it all the more charming.

Who was your favorite character and why?

John Cory! If you read any of his stories you need not ask why.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

dynamism that matches the author's tempo, great rendition of voices - one never has to wonder who said what as the dialog of multiple characters takes place. Mr. Brick IS John Cory - it is that believable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Real man (and John Cory) don't cry!

Any additional comments?

It pains me to say that - and I only do it because of this author's mastery of language nuances, wit and an amazing sense of humor - some of the jokes and phrases seem repetitive, especially after reading all of John Cory books. For example, how many times one can read "everybody is a comedian" before one stops smiling?
Overall this a a great book, that substantially improves on "the lion". Highly recommended!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Panther?

Enjoyed entire book.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Does an excellent job telling the story

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Typical Demille book

John Cory-too many wise cracks

Is there anything you would change about this book?

eliminate many of the Cory wise cracks. after a while they distract one from the story.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

yes, with a lot of editing.

Any additional comments?

Plot and detail very good. Not sure I will listen to another John Cory novel.

Slower than the other John Corey stories

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I don't regret the time I spent on this book, however I don't feel it lived up to the other John Corey books. The plot didn't progress as quickly and it lacked much of the suspense that his other books have. That said, it was still an enjoyable book and if another John Corey book comes out, I will likely purchase that book as well.

I don't think the performance of Scott Brick had anything to do with the slow-ness of the story - he is still one of my favorite narrators.

"Finally, Kate said,"John, that's enough.""

I'm surprised she didn't aim a gun at him and demand a straight answer.
Two thirds of this book consists of John Corey's smart-ass repartee and one third is action. But that action is exciting and worth the wait.
This story scares me because it makes me realize that our government is going to lose this on-going conflict because it insists our people play fair and by the rules but our enemies do not and will not do the same. We are fighting people who fervently and religiously believe we are evil.

Very good character development, small plot

Where does The Panther rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Nice to listen while traveling alone. Not as captivating as some of the other books

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There is a single plot. Find the bad guy and kill him. The author does a good job of developing the characters and describing the surroundings of every scene so that you feel you are there. But after a while it gets boring and the pace seems to slow down and drag for a long time.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

The main character of retired NYPD detective is nicely done
