Publisher's summary

A body has been found on the overlook near Mulholland Drive. The victim, identified as Dr. Stanley Kent, has two bullet holes in the back of his head, from what looks like an execution-style shooting. LAPD detective Harry Bosch is called out to investigate.

As soon as Bosch begins retracing Dr. Kent's steps, contradictions emerge. While Kent doesn't seem to have had ties to organized crime, he did have access to dangerous radioactive substances from just about every hospital in Los Angeles County. What begins as a routine homicide investigation opens up before Bosch into something much larger, more dangerous - and much more urgent.

Music added is annoying

It doesn’t happen much but the saxophone bits right in the middle of intense parts.

Good and Interesting

Loved it but did think the music between chapters was toomuch.

Just the right length

Some books are 1000 page novels (Stephen King), some are 500 pages with 150 chapters (James Patterson) and then there are writers like Michael Connelly who write a story to be the right length. Maybe it's his newspaper background, but The Overlook, though shorter than the other Harry Bosch books, is just the right length. Nothing rushed, no cutting story to save paper Michael Connelly has Harry in a situation that is exciting, moves forward and comes to a startling conclusion. And, compliments to Len Cariou for his excellent job in reading -- he lends so much to the atmosphere.

Story was good. Interesting details.

Would you listen to The Overlook: Harry Bosch Series, Book 13 again? Why?

No. Didn't like the narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

The details were very interesting. Ending was also good.

What didn’t you like about Len Cariou’s performance?

I didn't like his voice and the pauses he put in. Seemed unnatural. I don't need all the made up voices. I guess it has to be done as you might not be able to tell which characters are saying what, but I think it's distracting from the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Connelly Fan

What made the experience of listening to The Overlook: Harry Bosch Series, Book 13 the most enjoyable?

The same actor seems to read all of his books, and you begin to feel that this is the voice of the author or even Harry Bosch himself. We enjoy Connelly's story telling style.

Who was your favorite character and why?

All of his characters are well developed.

Any additional comments?

I'm finding that Connelly doesn't always completely trust his reader, and he does over explain some obvious things from time to time. But then we may be more knowledgeable listeners and a novice might need that detail. All-and-all a very enjoyable listen.

This one was weak.

Bosch’s reactions to things felt forced. Too much playing the outsider for not enough reason. Felt like ego and Bosch is usually driven by purpose.

Disappointed

Good narration but the story line a bit weak. Not one of Micheal Connelly best.

Hurried. Rushed. Not his best effort

This book seems like it was written the night before a school deadline. Implausible motivations and characters that are not caricature than characterized. Author usually does much better. The criticisms about the “original” music is spot on as well. It is poorly produced (too loud and comes in at odd times) and takes away rather than enhanced the performance.
