Good story bad narrator

The Hollows series starts out strong with Dead Witch Walking, and continues strong, avoiding some of the pitfalls and dead space that a couple of other paranormal authors left characters to stagnate in. Outlaw Demon continues to follow Rachel, Ivy and Jenks and strengthens the storyline around the Demons. Great fun to listen to . . . but the new narrator is horrible. She uses little baby voices and exaggerated vocal mannerisms that are just painful to try and get beyond, to focus on the characters and story. And would it be too much to ask for audible publishers of science fiction/fantasy/paranormal books to present a vocabulary list to their narrators ahead of time to prepare?

I like the book but...

I was distracted by the narrator's mispronunciation of key words and names, such as Piscary and ley. The book was entertaining and I am interested in reading the next one in the series. I just hope the narrator for this book won’t be reading for the next.

"Not News but..." was spot on. Narrator botched it

What did you like best about The Outlaw Demon Wails? What did you like least?

The story gave some additional depth to some of the characters. Unfortunately, I am starting to anticipate the stories rather than be surprised. I'm still disgruntled about her killing off Kisten.

What was most disappointing about Kim Harrison’s story?

Each additional story in the series is more and more dependent on the preceding books. They don't stand alone and I recommend reading them in order. I'm still disgruntled about her killing off Kisten. Oh, did I say that already? Probably means I really miss the tension of Kristen, as the "good boy" trying to manage having to do "bad" things. RIP Kristen... now you're REALLY dead. I'd love to have seen you reappear by some supernatural means. Oh, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gigi Bermingham’s performances?

No. She should have the common courtesy to listen to one of the preceding books to adopt the accepted pronunciations and voice characterizations. Read review by "Not News but...". I couldn't improve on that critique.

Did The Outlaw Demon Wails inspire you to do anything?

Look forward to Marguerite Gavin returning as narrator in the next installment.

Such a disappointment

I have been binging the Hollows books and enjoying them. This one however was just not good.

1. Like everyone else has said the narrator was awful. Why make the decision to change all the pronunciations? I cringed every time she said “lee” instead of “lay” for ley lines.

2. Rachel was insufferable in this book. She was whiny, over reactive (more than usual), and sometimes just bitchy.

3. The story at times just didn’t seem to hold together. There were times I was scratching my head wondering why something was happening.

I will listen to the next in the series. At least Margaurite will be back!

Excellent story

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, except when I was driving, of course. the author has mastered the ability to build a story in between the scenes. This enables the reader to fully comprehend the story the putting the reader "there" in the scene.

Did Gigi Bermingham do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Admittedly it took a few chapters to get use to the different narrator. Note to all narrators who have the unenviable task of narrating a book that another has been successful at. Listen to the previous book and know how to pronounce the names. She kept mispronouncing Piscary's name and I found myself yelling at her the correct pronunciation.Of course that's when i realized that besides that she did a good job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes I did find myself laughing quite a bit. Also saying "No,don't do it!" a lot.

Shouldn't have changed readers.

What didn’t you like about Gigi Bermingham’s performance?

It was the change of the reader that broke the story for me. If Gigi had been performing from the 1st book, I wouldn't have been going, that isn't how you pronounce his name or that is not how she sounds.

Did The Outlaw Demon Wails inspire you to do anything?

To not listen to Gigi's impersonation of a pixie. that hurt my ears.

Narrator

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The previous narrator, she was lovely

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jenks. He totally knows how to annoy the crap out of someone. He is a crazy pixie with the heart of a god

Would you be willing to try another one of Gigi Bermingham’s performances?

Not really. Maybe a series that she starts.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Outlaw Demon Wails?

The story was ok, the narration though, disappointment.

Any additional comments?

LEE lines? PIS-currie? Pronounciation off on some

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

LEE lines? PIS-currie? Pronounciation off on some names. Where was the editing here. did no one notice? Story was great. Other than the disconcerting pronunciation of some of the series key concepts, and character names, and the weird accents for Jenks and Algliorept...it was fine. I would not skip this book; too much really important stuff happens.

Really???

This is the worst book in the series so far due to the person reading the book. The voice changes are horrible and names and words are said incorrectly. Very disappointed!
