Agatha Christie

Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie (1890 –1976) was a British author, poet and playwright famed for her crime and detective fiction. The creator of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot is the best-selling author of all time.

A prolific writer, Christie grew up in a privileged background, and was home schooled. A voracious reader, Christie first took up writing as a hobby and then made it her life's work when the pieces she published garnered attention.

    "Poirot accent tough to handle."

Of course Christie's story was excellent. I have been spoiled by Hugh Frazier performances, apparently, because the Poirot accent for this was pretty awful. Other voices were fine.

This classic was brought to life by the talented narration of Mr. Thorn. I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

    "Great Story....Distracting Narration"
What did you like best about The Mysterious Affair at Styles? What did you like least?

The story line is great and great introduction of Poirot and Hastings.

What didn’t you like about David Thorn’s performance?

His Hercule Poirot performance is a bit much. His french/belgium accent distracts from what is being said.

Was The Mysterious Affair at Styles worth the listening time?

    yes

This is classic Christie but spoiled by the dreadful faux - Belgian accent of the narrator.

    "A decent Poirot story."

I'm not really a fan of Poirot, but this is probably one of the better ones that I have read. The mystery is twisty and whatnot. Poirot is full of himself as always. The narrator is spectacular. He does a great job of keeping you entertained with different voices, while also keeping you focused on the story.

    "Performance would be excellent except..."

The actors thick accent when voicing Hercule Poirot can sometimes be difficult to understand. I found a few instances where I was required to re-listen to a passage in order to make sure I understood properly. Otherwise it was an excellent story and good performance.

    "Poirot is always enjoyable"

Since this is the first Poirot mystery I felt compelled to get it. The story, plot and characters are not quite as compelling as others however this may be due to the narrators baffling attempt at a Belgian accent. No one is John Moffitt but this was a distraction from the story. Next time I'll listen to a sample prior to purchase.

    "Difficult to follow...not sure why."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I usually enjoy Christie novels, but I found this one difficult to follow, and I'm not sure why. I enjoyed the story, and Christie had me guessing all the way to the end, but something about the whole thing left me frustrated. I've listened to other Christie books from Audible, presented by different narrators, and found them quite enjoyable. The only thing I can think of, is that the narration must have been off for me. All-in-all, I would say it was an acceptable book, and I'm not sorry I spent the money on it, but I may reconsider purchasing another book presented by the same narrator.
