The Love Talker | [Elizabeth Peters]

The Love Talker

Surely Aunt Ida couldn't really have meant it what she said: "I only hope I will be taken before my mind fails. Fairies in the woods, indeed!" But when Laurie and her brother Doug visit her at Idlewood, they discover that Aunt Ida may indeed have something to fear in the woods.

    "Not her best"
    Any additional comments?

I normally love to listen to Elizabeth Peters' books, but this one falls a bit short of her normally fun listens.

The story is a bit far fetched and felt very contrived. It was even quite confusing at the end. I listened to the "climax" 3 times but couldn't find the continuity of the storyline. The "mystery" was somewhat (very) predictable and the love interest just wasn't plausible. It felt like a 'C' movie.

The narrator was great, as usual, but the material just wasn't there for her.

Ms Peters was evidently having a rough patch. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you're a 15 year old - maybe.

    "WARNING...PAGES MISSING"

Three pages were skipped during the book's climax in this audio version. A terrible editing error that really ruined the main "twist" of the story. Pass on the audio and read the book--it rambles a bit but is still enjoyable because it doesn't follow the usual pattern.

A 50-something who loves sci-fi, cozy mysteries, thrillers, an occasional romance, and any genre if it is a good story. And especially if it makes me laugh! No vampires or zombies though - these are NOT sci-fi!

    "An OK story"

Laurie goes to visit her aunts and uncle in their mansion in the woods, and finds that there is something sinister going on. Her brother Doug turns up, and there is a sexy handyman involved too. This has the classic Elizabeth Peters flair, with quite a few giggles, but not her best work. I'd probably give it 3 stars if it was any other writer! I would give the editors 1 star if I could. There is a substantial portion of the book missing at the climax of the story, though you can figure out what happened by listening to the recap the characters have at the end. Still, it is disconcerting, and I backed up the book several times to see what I'd missed, only to find it wasn't me that missed anything!

(Spoiler alert! Don't read the rest if you don't want any spoilers!) I was quite put off by the 'relationship' between Laurie and Doug. Being raised brother and sister, whether they actually are or not, should mean they would never want to fall in love. I was just thinking 'Ewwwwwwww'!

    "Great series"

I love this Amelia Peabody series. The heroine is a feisty woman based in the late 1800's early 1900's. I have always been interested in Egyptology and this is a wonderful mystery series set in this context. Early feminine Activist. Great humor and character development.
