Publisher's summary

Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole."

While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Together with his former second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and Myrna Landers, they journey deeper and deeper into Québec. And deeper and deeper into the soul of Peter Morrow. A man so desperate to recapture his fame as an artist, he would sell that soul. And may have. The journey takes them further and further from Three Pines, to the very mouth of the great St. Lawrence river. To an area so desolate, so damned, the first mariners called it The land God gave to Cain. And there they discover the terrible damage done by a sin-sick soul.

But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. Unfair

I have never written a review before. I almost didn't buy this book because of all the negative reviews I did read. But it was the next one in the series and I didn't want to miss something that might be important. I'm so glad that I got the book ! It's not like the other books. It goes more into the minds and hearts of the people in three Pines. I thought it was lovely and was not bored for a moment.

Always riveting and informative

Reading the Gamache novels with the history and descriptions of Quebec tickles the traveler's curiosity. I often find myself looking up further information and/or images related or described in the books. The story telling is superb and the characters neither perfect nor perfectly flawed. We all want a Three Pines but be careful, Ms. Penny is not afraid to break your heart!

Artful mystery

A beautiful tale about art, artists and a policeman who is a sensitive and thoughtful human being. Depictions of eastern Quebec are wonderful.

Last of the Ralph Cosham Narrations 😢

I cannot bear to listen to the new narrator. I will try reading the printed book and hearing Mr. Cosham’s voices in my head.
This was my favorite mystery series so this change is terribly disappointing.
The narrator of Peter Granger’s books would have been a better choice as a replace.
Such a loss.

Penny gets better and better

What made the experience of listening to The Long Way Home the most enjoyable?

The reader is phenomenal - his voice for Gamache is perfect. Although I've never been to Quebec, I'm entranced by Penny's descriptions and obvious love for the landscape and people. This book spent time in a new location - by the St Lawrence river - and we also learned about a famous Quebecois painter.

What other book might you compare The Long Way Home to and why?

The only other mystery writer that compares is P.D. James

Which character – as performed by Ralph Cosham – was your favorite?

Gamache, Beauvoir, and Ruth

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It makes me homesick for a place I've never been!

Any additional comments?

I really think you need to read these books in order - you need to understand the past of some of the characters to really understand their motives in this book (particularly Ruth).
