Publisher's summary

In a daring and chilling debut, Brad Thor draws us into a sinister labyrinth of political intrigue and international terrorism, serving up an explosive cocktail of unrelenting action as one man is pushed to the edge.

On the snow-covered slopes of Utah, the unthinkable has just become a nightmarish reality: 30 Secret Service agents have been viciously executed and the vacationing president of the United States kidnapped by one of the most lethal terrorist organizations in the Middle East - the Fatah Revolutionary Council.

But surviving agent and ex-Navy SEAL Scot Harvath doesn't believe the Fatah Revolutionary Council is responsible for the attack. Driven by his professional code of duty and honor, Harvath creates his own rules to get some answers. But his search for the truth raises the blood pressure of his superiors...and casts his own life in mortal jeopardy. The deadly machinations have been set in motion by a shadowy coalition, comprising some of the highest-ranking officials in government and business - men who operate above the law, men who realize the threat Harvath poses to their hidden agenda...men who will do anything to stop him.

Framed for murder and on the run, Harvath takes his own brand of justice to the towering mountains of Switzerland where he finds an improbable ally in the beautiful Claudia Mueller of the Swiss Federal Attorney's Office. Together they must brave the subzero temperatures and sheer heights of treacherous Mount Pilatus - and enter the den of the most notorious team of professional killers the world has ever known.

Good book, not the best, but good

It was a good book, I liked the story line, engaging and kept me interested. Enough action to keep me going, I like action in my books. Good development of characters. My only complaints are the tone of the none leading characters made them seem overly dramatic and angry even when not really appropriate for the situation. Also they are called magazine's not clips, clips are not magazine's. It's basic firearm knowledge and disappointed to hear the incorrect term used over and over in a Brad Thor book. I will be listening to more of his books and hope he got that straightened out.

Really enjoyed the book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’m very picky about narrators and Armand Schultz is now added to my list of preferred narrators.

Not Sure What Took Me So Long

Not sure why I have been hesitant to start reading the Scot Harvath series. If the rest of the series is like this book, then I’ve got a lot of reading to do to catch up to the 2023 book being released this month. I'm definitely invested in this protagonist.

As typical for this genre, the reader will need to suspend reality in certain places, but that is what makes these types of books fun to read. This book has sufficient action, some suspense, and a few places where the reader has to take a few leaps of faith. Although there are gaps in logic by the main characters, it's a good first book. From other reviews it sounds like the series only gets better.

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

The biggest logic gap for me was when Scot was in the mountain, and he didn't pick up the weapon of the dead guard near him after he rescued the president. In some cases, the author explained why Scot or Claudia couldn't get an adversary's gun, but after he had the president there was no reason not to get the nearby guard's gun. Not that there weren't other illogical actions in the story, but for some reason this one bothered me more than the rest.

Overall, I'll definitely read more books in this series. This was a fast paced, fun read.

Almost, but not quite

This story had all the elements for a spectacular novel, but there is something missing. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but even though the technical and procedural aspects seem on point, the character dialogue feels very high school and the narrator maybe middle school. I won’t be continuing with this series.

Brad Thor Outstanding

I am in the process of listening to these all over again from the start since a new one is coming out shortly. Scott Harvath, The Gray Man and Mitch Rapp are absolute favorites!
